Winky book one - Chapter 1 Black Night

by

NOTE: rather than post consecutive chapters of my children's books I'll be posting chapters at random, picking out some that I feel are representative of the best ones.

Darkened hearts on a moon-less night map out their evil aims. What isn’t theirs is what they crave, the throne they seek to claim. But evil is as evil does and what’s been planned takes flight. The winning king and his precious queen will lose the game tonight!

The evil one spoke:

“Now listen up, my loyal friends, before we take the throne,
my brother’s fame and all he’s done to one and all are known.
Fear not those loyal to his throne, our cause is right and just.
Remember, faithful ones, that my goals are the ones to trust!”

The band of thugs moved quietly toward the palace. When they reached the great lake Amaz that surrounded it each of the rebels quietly hopped in and began the long swim. Toads generally like to swim at a slow pace, but tonight they swam with all their strength. Upon reaching the rear entrance to the palace, the rebels quickly overcame the two guards stationed there, bound their hands and feet and gagged them. Their leader now spoke once again:

“On this black night we take what’s ours

and never more look back
Our destiny lies here my friends,
my plan is right on track!”

With confident hearts they entered the palace without resistance. It was after midnight and everyone was fast asleep. The little rebel band followed their leader in without hesitation. After all, this was his hour! For many months they had planned out every detail, with all potential roadblocks taken into account. In their minds they simply could not fail. Their leader was clearly insane. Still, many in the royal city of Anura had become bored with the quiet, peaceful rule of the current government. No drama. No suspense. No excitement. The rebel leader promised to shake things up a bit, to take Anura to the very heights of glory, even if it meant that blood had to be spilled. For some, the overthrow just had to take place!

They now approached the royal bedchamber. To their surprise no one was on guard at the door. They burst into the room and let out a war cry as the lead rebel went straight for the king, his brother, and killed him. The queen was captured and two of the rebels hurried her to the swamp prison just beyond the palace grounds. But the evil lord wasn’t content to just seize his brother’s throne. He had been told that the queen had recently spawned and so decided that every tad should die to prevent any future prince from laying claim to the kingship. The guards that had been standing outside the palace quickly responded to
the trouble going on inside, but it was too little, too late. Their king was already dead and they were outnumbered. One by one they fell until only a few remained. The survivors
were taken to the dungeon and kept under guard until their fates could be determined.

Meanwhile, the rebel leader and one of his followers located the little pond outside the palace that was used only by the king and queen. Sure enough, there were hundreds of little tads swimming about madly, as if they somehow sensed that danger was near. The rebel commander gave the signal as the other released poison into the pond. Before long all of the tads stopped swimming. The rebels had won. Anura, the royal city, was theirs!

But what they didn’t know, what they couldn’t know, was that one of the little tads had already morphed into a young toad. Playing in his own special room in the palace, utterly unaware of what had just taken place, he was suddenly seized by his nanny and carried away to a strange and distant place.

The name of the little toad… was Winky.

You really must do something with these children's stories. Never give up on submitting your M/S very important. This is incredibly captivating right from the word go; dark and murky, atmospheric, shades of Narnia maybe, but not - this is an entirely different kingdom where the print dissolves and I've walked into the story. Obviously wanting to know what happens next. I have to know! Lovejoy-Burton
