she lamented all her faults
yet laments weren't what you'd think
not having all new clothes in town
brought her to the brink

she listened to jazz all day
no work to interfere
a tall thin girl of pedigree
most people they would sneer

but worth to her was everything
she'd covet in her mind
cigarettes, cars and clothing
men twists to her life

she saw a life of hardship
lay on the other side
of fences 'round her garden
down streets of muddied piles

where openness of desire
held nothing for those folks
toil merely a dirty word
to carry when you're broke

this feeling of elation
left one so circumspect
as to rally demons
like dollars thrown to chest

later, when she'd grown into
a mid aged woman mom
she'd look back to times of youth
and secrets smiled upon
