It depends: if the intent is to paint a masterpiece (the Nightwatch springs to mind) then a rich vocabulary can give colour and form; however, if the intent is to explore nuanced meaning and emotion, then perhaps the "rich" words should be like salt - just a sprinkle to enhance the flavour. Interestingly, Rembrandt used a very limited range of pigments yet created amazingly rich pictures.



Perhaps I tend to minimalism: less is more.
