To The Poetry Soup

Blog Posted by Nathan D.: 1/4/2013 10:14:00 AM
I have seen some poems and comments removed for various reasons all pertaining to infractions against your rules. Weather I feel it was warranted or not is of no concern, what is of concern is how many others go unnoticed. It looks like your singling out some poets and letting others do as they please. I would appreciate it if you would show some consistency instead of merely picking a few out here and there. It certainly wouldn't hurt to be proactive, instead of waiting for people to point out what poems bother them, and catch as many as you can. I have seen too many poems that have cuss words and some that belong on porno sites not on a poetry site. I can't say that I am disappointed since I lost all hope for humanity long ago but I can say I am surprised since you generally do a good job of running the show. The most recent example I can give is a post by Joe Flach titled Watching him Watching her-adults only, this is a disturbing thing to find here on the soup and shame on all of you that commented and showed that you approved of it. I sincerely hope you take my concerns as serious as you do everyone else's here. Thank you for your time.

That's not how things work Nathan. You Souper's police THE SOUP. We just respond to your requests. If there is a poem on the website that breaks the rules, we typically don't know about it until YOU tell us via email. In the future, blogs are not the forum for notifications. Thanks, just email us with the problem poem. BTW, thanks Soupers for keeping this a relatively CLEAN website.

Hundreds of poems are posted on this website every day. No way we can read all of them. As Carol said, we rely on YOU.

It's better to know our own limits relating to sexy/sensual poetry than having to wonder how far one can go relating to the Soups rules. We all have thoughts on the above. To what ever level it's down to the individual to police. Overstep the mark, await the consequences. As for Joe's poem, are we indeed that badly offended as adults, come on!! <*> by the way, Happy New Year PS :)

I have to admit, when I read poetry that's suggestive but not over the top, I applaud the thinking of the writer. Having read Joe's poem, if one can class it as Porn, then this shouldn't be a poetry site. One only has to go to Writers-Network to read such trash, and I mean TRASH. Within poetry and writing, so many topics are written about. Whether, sexy & sensual, religious, nature or what ever. Being a poetry site, one has to cover as many genres as possible. Is Joe's poem bordering on Porn, not a chance. If he desires to alter it, it's his choice and no one else's. <*> If one doesn't like a TV Program for what it contains, don't watch it, as for poetry, don't read it and move on.

That's the key James. You can be suggestive and sensual and NOT be overt or vulgar. That's when you know you are a good poet and command language and words.

Nathan, you could have simply brought your concerns to my attention and I could have made changes to perhaps soften the tone. But, since you are making such an issue of this - I am more inclined to see what others might say. I am sorry, however, if my poem offends you.

Nathan, thank you for removing the vulgarity from the comment you posted on the poem. Having done so, I have altered by comment above.

PoetrySoup does not read the blogs... per say... at the bottom of each page is a contact us spot... They need help in policing the air ways... They don't have the time to read every thing.
