Who fancies this as a new feature? - Nina Parmenter's Blog

Hello, I’m Nina :-)

I have been dipping in and out of poetry since I was very young - in fact one of my most treasured possessions is a book of poems I wrote when I was six. (That and my copy of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes - which I still love to this day!) As a teenager I used to gift little rhymes to my friends to cheer them up but I never seriously continued my scribbling into adulthood.

If you’d told me a year ago how much poetry I’d be writing today, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My brain was fogged by baby brain and, unbeknown to me, an undiagnosed illness. Towards the end of 2017, the baby brain began to improve, I got the illness under control, and with a burst of joy at its new-found clarity and creativity, my brain started to spew forth poetry as never before! I seized the moment, started a blog (called “It All Rhymes”) and with that going down well, joined Poetry Soup in January 2018. So far, I’ve not looked back!

In “real life”, I’m a Marketing Manager and I live in Wiltshire, UK with my fabulous husband and two wonderful, exhausting boys.

Who fancies this as a new feature?

Blog Posted:4/3/2019 1:00:00 PM

WI was think of asking PS for a new feature but just wanted to see if anyone else thinks it’s a good idea!

I’d love to see a “challenges” or “workshop” area where people can host challenges - like contests, but not contests. Instead a host suggests a theme or technique, people work on it and submit their poems, and in return the host commits to giving some feedback - both positive and *shock* some friendly suggestions for improvement. Other people who’ve entered the challenge may also critique others, in a souply and convivial fashion.

I just feel I would like to know others’ full and honest opinions sometimes, because I’m here to grow as a poet. Also I’d love to just be able to see what other poets do with ideas without it being a contest.

Do you like the idea? Do you hate it? Be honest lol!

I'm repeating myself...but...I have only ever received (to me) meaningful (oh, I see that!) feedback from 3 people here at soup thru the years (hey! not saying my name should be included along with other renowned Minnesota writers like Robert Bly, Sinclair Lewis or Bill Holm) one passed away, one is a respected publisher & the other is too busy dropping poems in zines 'round the globe...geez, I only got time to take care of Ma (she fell again, not good) & get lost in the woods lookin' for shrooms & chasin' dragonflies in a few wks! If u want help with your poetry, soup me & I will give you referral...

Er I think I know what you mean James! Maybe it’s best to just request feedback from poets whose work we’d love to match in quality...
Date: 4/3/2019 6:16:00 PM
I remember we did this in the blogs a few years back, even those that volunteered their poems did’t really live the feedback they received. As Andrea points out this is essentially a social site, people do not come here to be criticised. Myself I don’t mind at all but my skin is thicker than most. But Nina, by all means give it a go. Take care, Richard

Soup has a place for chats and I think they even had a place for this kind of workshop idea you have in mind! Like I said, it never took off, but maybe with your leadership, it could be a real thing!!

It was pretty sad how it fell apart. Marie used to give us challenges, however!! She would give us a theme each week and everyone would write on that topic. SHE was the sole judge. It made me mad to lose when I felt I did great, but some of my top winners here at Soup came from poems I wrote for Marie's challenges and later posted here at Soup!

Yeah I went there once, it’s kinda like the internet circa 1995 and everybody’s left!! Posted a poem. Tumbleweed. It’s not a very visible part of the site.
Date: 4/3/2019 4:02:00 PM
I recall how we were doing it at Shadowpoetry. Someone posed a poem asking for critiques and a few hot shots who were no better poets themselves would give their opinions, and the person who had posted the poem would get into "defense mode" and sometimes fighting would erupt! I am someone who thinks out my poetry, so I do not care about analyzing it. I just don't enjoy analysis of anything really. Let me read it and just enjoy it. I am NOT gonna tell a poet: you should do this and this and this, when I just don't care. I mean, you like it or you don't!! Obvious things like typos or wrong meter, etc. are about the only thing I critique for most people. If it's a friend who I know will value my input, I will share my suggestions with them in a Soupmail. That's just me, Nina.

SOS fails to realize that ALL contests have flaws already inherent in them, so I prefer things to remain how they are. i have discussed this at Greg's blog. The thing you suggest, Nina, has been tried before. it did not have success. It was tried at Shadowpoetry without success either. Simply put, many poets do not like criticism. I have been blasted for simply telling people to drop the use of archaic language! If poets cannot even take simple criticism, how will they take being deeply analyzed?

I have said this numerous times, but here I go again: anonymity is the key. I was judge for Shadowpoetry's contests with big cash prizes, but there were two other judges and I did not even know who they WERE, so we were giving our scores to Marie, the website owner, and she would average our scores based on the 5 criteria we all judged. I did not always like the other judges' choices but ultimately the top winners were super good poems! No bias, total objectivitiy. Give people anonymity and see them ROAR. Soup is not set up for this style of judging, so just let it all alone, SOS. I mean, what the heck does it matter to you? Aren't you off fighting the apocalypse somewhere?

All humans have flaws Andrea, so yeah it only makes sense all contests have flaws. Still, if it quacks like a duck...
Date: 4/3/2019 2:29:00 PM
This has been suggested before, in fact, Andrea likes to think of the "contests" as challenges, or prompts already. Yes, eliminate standard contests, replace with poetry prompts and eliminate the judging for those, keep premium contests as is.

The standard contests have always been a source of contention. My opinion is to eliminate them altogether. Why would a poetry site need two types of contests, 1 real and 1 fake?

I’d be more than happy to leave contests as they are, but I’d just love an honest, constructive workshop space on here. I always wonder what goes unsaid when people read my poems!
