Help please Soupers! - Publishing "traditional" poetry - Nina Parmenter's Blog

Hello, I’m Nina :-)

I have been dipping in and out of poetry since I was very young - in fact one of my most treasured possessions is a book of poems I wrote when I was six. (That and my copy of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes - which I still love to this day!) As a teenager I used to gift little rhymes to my friends to cheer them up but I never seriously continued my scribbling into adulthood.

If you’d told me a year ago how much poetry I’d be writing today, I probably wouldn’t have believed you. My brain was fogged by baby brain and, unbeknown to me, an undiagnosed illness. Towards the end of 2017, the baby brain began to improve, I got the illness under control, and with a burst of joy at its new-found clarity and creativity, my brain started to spew forth poetry as never before! I seized the moment, started a blog (called “It All Rhymes”) and with that going down well, joined Poetry Soup in January 2018. So far, I’ve not looked back!

In “real life”, I’m a Marketing Manager and I live in Wiltshire, UK with my fabulous husband and two wonderful, exhausting boys.

Help please Soupers! - Publishing "traditional" poetry

Blog Posted:9/21/2018 6:53:00 AM

Hello lovely people!

I'd like to pick your collective Soupy brains if you would be so kind.

My dream is to one day publish a book of poetry. Well - you don't know if you don't try. From what I have read so far, a good way to start is to see if I can get any magazines to print something of mine - to gain a little credibility. (Anything I say, do correct me if I'm wrong, as I know nothing about publishing and have only just started researching!) So, two questions.

1. The poetry I love, and am passionate about, and the writes I am proudest of, have rhyme and metre. Are there any magazines out there that carry this sort of poetry? I have started to research and feel a bit depressed as the British ones in particular don't seem to regard this sort of material very highly! Any tips from your own experience would be greatly appreciated!

2.  Some magazines state they won't print poetry that has previously been published elsewhere. Does poetrysoup count as elsewhere? Does my own blog?

There is so much I don't know but these are my two big sticking points at the moment! Any help would be amazing.

Thank you, gorgeous souls.

Nina x

Thanks Line, Caren and Wayne - good to see more people using self publishing that you DON’T have to pay for, I’m going to look into these and also into Wattpad. I’m all for bring in control of your own destiny! Line, can’t wait for the book - hope we can order it from the UK!

Hi Nina, I am going the CreateSpace.com route for my TIPS FOR BUDDING POETS ANTHOLOGY (Title not to be announced till launch). No cost for creating the ready-to-print version, so the cost of ordering physical books via Amazon will be very reasonable @ $20 approximately (I hope).

Nina my books are self published on www.lulu.com. And they are sold by Barnes and Noble. They are not poetry but they are books. The best part is that you format them and upload them yourself. Lots of fun and no publishing costs to you.

Just read thru some bookstore poetry volumes. They had nothing, NOTHING, over the poets’ poetry submitted by SO MANY on PS. Publishing industry is a victim of so many poets/poems & no convenient management tools. Bias and familiarity reign. CreateSpace rox. Be master of yer own fate. Market as ya’ll deem neccessary. Blessings Upon All Poets!!!! ;-)))

Nina, full steam ahead! I can't add much to what the others have said, except that I have learned that "displaying" a written piece online is considered "published". I'm considering going the way of the Amazons myself...one of these days. Best of luck with your endeavors. Your work truly deserves to be circulated and celebrated.

Thank you Jim - wow Soupers are so lovely! Yes... one of these days... there is the small question of getting enough material together before any kind of publishing - and being happy enough with that material that I’m prepared to let it go!
Date: 9/22/2018 1:52:00 PM
Nina, one avenue that I found for me was very good, is if you want to publish a book and not pay for it, but are not counting on a steady income, is to use Create Space sponsored by Amazon.com. If you are able to layout the book yourself and design the cover, using their templates, which I did, the publishing part is free and Amazon lists your book on their site under books to sell worldwide and prints them on demand. If they sell one, you get a paid a percentage. I did it mostly to organize my poems and have something for my family to keep, and I have two books on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, and have sold a few. You can learn more here: https://www.createspace.com/

Thank you Sandra! I’m so glad I posted this blog - such great advice from every direction! This is another thing I did not know about - I always wandered where those funny books on amazon came from! Really interesting, thank you.

My alternative “legacy plan” (yes, I do sound like an Olympic Games committee) is to write THE NOVEL. I have two friends who have had novels/biogs published so it does feel like it could be achievable. It’s just... writing it! I do enjoy writing poetry more!

this is a better goal, Nina. Also you should still pursue children books. I think a poet who could write a great children book would have a better chance of success.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to leave such thought-provoking comments. May sound silly but my urge to publish isn’t about money - I have a job for that, which I (generally) enjoy - and it’s not about getting reads or feedback which, my goodness, I couldn’t get more of than I do from you wonderful people on here (I’ve been here since January and my top poem has about 900 “reads” which to me is AMAZING) - no, it’s about leaving something behind when I’ve gone. But all your advice is probably what I needed to hear!

My .02. I once had the same aspirations, even had a few of my poems published but people aren't exactly breaking down the door to the bookstore to buy books of poetry and publisher's aren't interested in publishing books people won't buy. I decided what better way to be read than to put your poems on a worldwide poetry site. At least the people who read it, will enjoy it and be more likely to understand what you aren't saying.

yes they count anything that can be seen by the public as "published" it is so stupid.

Nina, I was feeling like you years ago. I did the "vanity publishing" route. There were some really fun magazines like Bell's Letter's and others that you basically would also subscribe to and they had contests for money, etc. But to actually get into a magazine that pays YOU oh my, that is almost unheard of. I suppose a free verse poet really good at obscure poetry would have a chance at financial success! that is just my two cents. I helped edit a really nice magazine called The SP Quill. Shadow Poetry's Marie Summers would not make poets subscribe just to be in it. She was very selective. She told me only 25% of the poems got past her to me and then I'd help her narrow the poems down to the 10% to be in the magazine WE did a top ten list that those in the magazine would vote on. Those were the days!! Tommy down here has it right. Don't take off your poems just to be in a magazine! You are better off getting read here at the Soup.

I'm hoping to do the same, Nina, but have NO idea what direction to go in, (and I'm NOT looking to self-publish, that can be done by anyone with the money, and I wish to MAKE money, not spend more than I already do, lol). I DO know that putting poems on The Soup or any blog means they are "published", though I was also told by multiple folks that if I REMOVED said pieces from the internet, (I post many on my FB page as well), that I could then submit. Publisher requirements I've seen want a portfolio/collection of a minimum of 140, though I think it varies. Please let me know what you learn ... I am still digging and will do the same! Best of luck - your work is certainly good enough! :-) <3

Thank very much Greg, that’s really helpful as it feels like it would be a full time job just researching all this! It would greatly pain me to remove my favourite stuff from here, I have to say! And thank you for the compliment too... too kind x

Best of luck with your project Nina, I am impressed. I am sure there are many good folk on here that will help you. Don't quote me but putting poems on here means that they are published, Hopefully I am wrong. Tom

Thank you very much too. I had a really critical read of my children’s book today and realised I needed to pretty much start again so I’m wondering whether poetry might be a better project!
