Clarification of My Name!

Blog Posted:10/16/2010 8:26:00 AM
Hey everyone... Well, my full name is SYED AMAAN AHMAD, but as I have noticed, people think that Syed is my name and they keep calling me Syed. Actually, my real name is AMAAN.

This "Syed" is just a title...it is Arabic, and if we translate this in English (literal translation), it means SIR (Or Lord/Master). so, it is like Sir Amaan Ahmad. Syed represents Royal Blood, which is a direct lineage of Islamic Prophet Muhammad; it is like some honorific title...

So, I request everyone to call me AMAAN and not Syed because it is like "Sir"...and I like being called Amaan, with my name :)

Glance at History (Historical Reference Wikipedia):

The history of Sayyids or Syeds in South Asia dates back to more than 1000 years ago. Several Syeds visited India as merchants along with the general Arab traders or mostly escaping from AbbasidUmayyad and Ottoman empires. They also ruled over India during the Delhi Sultanate during the short-lived period of 1414-1451.Their name again figures in Indian history at the break up of the Mughal empire, when the Syed Brothers created and dethroned Emperors at their will (1714–1720). The first Mahommedans appointed to the Council of India and the first appointed to the Privy Council were both Syeds.

@Andrea: Thanks for your kind words. Well, this title is my identity, like in passport, PAN card, etc; and I use this because it is necessary to use(cultures differ). However, once I used Amaan Ahmad (on one of my credit cards) and it is still there and kinda creating issues for me...so I prefer keeping the full name, which includes this title. I hope this clears all the confusion ;) Love!-- Amaan

@Constance: Haha that was a decade ago... lol...uhmm well, I don't know if I am proud of my family history, but I personally believe that a man is a real man who does something on his own. Anyone can get anything from forefathers, but a true man does everything on his own, from scratches, he builds his own castle... well, I don't think I have anything to do with my title or family but it is there, so it will be there... Love you a tons... --Amaan ;)

@Andrea: Well, it is not about "India" or any country. Syeds are everywhere in the world. And well, yes, all people who belong to "Syed" family use "Syed" before the name and even you can see in Western culture before the name, such as "Sir John Patricks" or "Sir Parkinson Cromwell" etc. (though some get this title as knighthood), etc... I mean, it is like, the name comes with title... but honestly, I am an atheist... lol...guys, you know what? When I was a teenager, I used to call myself FRANKIE lol....later on, I got back to my original name...

Amaan, a question for you. Do all your people use "sir" in front of their names then? Is it that formal? It would seem odd if we did that in the western culture so I was just wondering if they all do it in your country?

My name is iolanda but in California they write it with a Y that is Yolanda. In Europe where I was born and baptized it's spelled with an i . So now some people who don't know me pronounce it aiolanda. I have to correct them and let them know that I am "iolanda with an i (eye) :)

Hi Iolanda, no it is not fashionable to call "Syed"... It is a title...and it is the proof that Syeds are direct descendants of prophet Muhammad... Syeds have family-trees, etc; and it is just the title (family title)...well, I am not a religious person...but well, It sounds as if I am being called "sir" and not Amaan ... lol... and the meaning of Amaan is "Fearless/Protective" and my mother kept this name :P hehehe and thanks a lot everyone for calling me Amaan, whew, it's great to get the name back :P lol
