DO YOU HAVE A POETIC FINGERPRINT? With footnotes

Blog Posted:7/17/2017 3:07:00 AM

Ernst Kirchner(1880-1938),the German expressionist artist, committed suicide , his art  was considered degenerate by the Nazis and so . much of it was  destroyed by them in the thirties .

Here is a link to show you his style

http://www.threadforthought.net/kirchner-berlin-street/

Two questions arise from the foregoing that would also apply to we poets!

You can see Ernst had a distinctive recognisable artistic 'fingerprint'... does your poetry have a similar identification, although not being  visual art  it maybe less obvious?

And secondly Ernst was considered not to conform to the ' prevailing majority' viewpoint, do you think poets too should be ' pushing the envelope' as they say.?

FOOTNOTE

1.Perhaps you would like to name some poets who have in yho pushed the envelops of our art, I have added a couple in a comment hereto.

2.Some months back Cyndi( who has a talent for this type of critiqu imho) included her assessment of my poetic footprint. So maybe it takes some else to recognise aspects of  our poetic footprint.I certainly cannot recognise 'footprints or style ' as such in my regular PS contest!

I think it isn't truly about pushing envelopes. It's about exploring what interests and moves the poet. I do think that poetry should bring something fresh to the reader, even if the subject is familiar. If it has been said before, uses boring rhyme schemes, has no originality or unique wording... why write it at all? Writing poetry shouldn't feel like being pressured to non-conform... but neither should a poet believe that as long as they sound like everybody else then they don't need to further develop their skills (Worse yet, they actually model their work after another poet, replicate a style. AWK!!) I think it is essential that poets follow their instincts, nudge not push :)

Oh, forgot to mention someone I feel offered something new to poetry. Eileen Myles uses very short lines, severe line breaks that play with preconception. Her style bounces impressions within the reader... I like it. I don't write the same way. But I like the intentional anti-flow of her poetry.

I'm not a big fan of "envelop pushers" I like classic style or a modern free verse that is not trying to be outrageous in its presentation. I believe many poets here have a poetic footprint we can all recognize. There are some here, such as Jan and bunch of fellows I can't name off hand, who do very well with limericks., but I can sometimes recognize their individual styles.

I guess my idea of pushing the envelop is when it gets so far out there that the poetry is incomprehensible to me!

I take your point Andrea but if there had not been poets who pushed the envelope,we would not have the 'English sonnet' or verse libre that derived from imagist pushers of envelopes

Constance has a definite style of soft poetic sadness in many of her writes. There is a guy who goes by two names. One name is C. Thorton I think. He has a very interesting intellectual wit and I can tell his humor right off. Irene's humor is homespun and easy to spot. Armand (who uses a different name here at soup) has a gorgeous definitive free verse style as do Charlotte and some other women who don't post here any longer. PD's style is unique. Gosh, I could go on and on and on.(but there is not enough space!)

I am allergic to "shoulds". I think poets need to write in their own voice. For some, that will mean "pushing the envelope"; for others, that may mean expressing themselves in a more traditional form. The ones whose work wins big awards and survives through the ages will be those whose poetry contributed something drastically new, pushed boundaries, went against the majority viewpoint- like it was with any art form. But I don't think it means all poets "should" do this, because there are many different reasons to write.

Agnes, it is doubtful that all would do so as we are each unique creations in the eyes of God.
