EMILY D a poet for me (with update link July 14)

Blog Posted:7/10/2017 12:47:00 AM

With the possible exception of Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson is now recognized as the most important American poet of the 19th century.", so begins the Wiki page on this most reclusive and prolific of  poets

Emily remains one of my favourite poets, especially her succinct style and use of pauses and caesura

Do you think this judgement above,to be correct, if like me you admire her poetry ,what is it that attracts you to her ,....or

on the otherhand, maybe  you are'nt,so , what is your critique?

Emily D a poet for me, but how about thee?

FOOTNOTE
A.here is a link to just a few of her 1775 poems

B.In addition to inspiring we poets we her short succinct style ,she also inspired US composer John Adams who included two of Emily's poems in his minimalist piece Harmonium, her is a link to his website in regard thereto

Brian, I had no idea they were first cousins!!!! There is a kind of quiet passion, that 'still waters run deep' feeling to E.D. And I've often felt that although L.M.A. was far more an extrovert, far more social, that she, too, shared a similar understanding of human nature. I never knew they were FIRST cousins! How fascinating.

They certainly ran deep Cyndi in Emily D's case as the variety of topics she covered therewith

So enmoured was I with Emily's succinct style ,when I was into short forms here in a big way,I wrote a number 'after ' her no 1732 .It may or may not have a title, uses a word with separate meanings,(or one that sounds the same, with a different spelling) with the intention to mean several things, therby to enhance the thought's ambiguity/enigma. ED 1732 begins: My life closed twice-/ before it's close.

Some aspects on my blog here have prompted me to bring forward the next blog I had in hand as a kind of spin off

Emily D ,apparently wrote many of her prolific number of poems in short space of a few years .It is interesting that this 'fountain' of inspiration is a common happening to we poetic types.

Mary Evans (George Eliot) was an exact age contemporary to Emily D and she adopted a pen name, not ,because females were not able to be published but to be taken seriously as females 'pennings ' were considered 'light hearted'.That was the glass ceiling for females of the 19th century(in literary circles ) .The Bronte's did the same with their poetry). So there would appear to be other reasons why Emily D 'chose ' not to publish ,her family were after all quite wealthy .

Agnes, Emily D for me , was for me a 'child of her circumstances' The lost love of Newton ,(who died too young) ,then, the daughter 'chosen thereby' to care at home for over two decades for her mother. Her poetry became her outlet for these circumstances ,hence their 'melancholic' flavour.

I discovered her when I was a teen and fell in love with her poetry. I never wished to emanate her style... but I've always admired her voice and brevity. She was well ahead of her time. I recently learned she was distantly related to Louisa May Alcott and I wondered if there were letters/ correspondence as I feel they shared insight into human nature.

Emily Dickinson to me rates in the top ten poets of all time. I find very few that reveal such depths of soul heart and wisdom on life , love and human existence in their poetry as she does. READING HER POETRY AND KNOWING HER LIFE STORY AND ONE KNOWS THIS IS A TRUE POET THAT SPEAKS DIRECTLY FROM HER HEART.. Added to that, one can see that she was an extremely kind and intelligent person.

Brian, did she *want* to break the glass ceiling? Do you think her reclusive nature was caused by societal circumstance rather than personality? Curious what you think. I am currently reading Sewall's ED biography, and so far I am not seeing evidence (but I'm not through yet)

Yes Robert, sad that her era prevented 'her breaking the glass ceiling' which surely she has now in our times.
