HI CINDI what are my type of podium poems? a spin off blog

Blog Posted:5/12/2017 8:47:00 AM

Hi Cyndi,Further to your comments and advice on Connie's blog

My sponsored contests are always ANY FORM ,ANY THEME max of 25 lines

What would you say are the poetic criteria etc that appeal to me and are likely to achieve a premium podium spot or a winners spot in my standard contest.?

I follow the PS advice to sponsors namely:

I judge entries as they are entered, those that appeal are then transferred to round 2 there and then

later I re- read round 2 and transfer those that still appeal to winner round( just 10 if it is a premier)

When the contest is closed I  re-read to sort the winners into placings

I try to do this without delay..

as my contests are all judged blind(I don't read poetry elsewhere other than entries to my contest's)...

and as I am as eager as the contestants to know who  the podium winners are and who has placed where.

I do not make any further comments on why I placed as I did.

I prefer to get another contest available and spend my time here in this way reading poetry and (blogging on a regular basis)

PS to PS blog readers whilst this is addressed to Cyndi that doesn't stop you commenting if you feel so inc!lined

Connie, I have left a few poems on Soup which did win. What I meant was that if a Souper removes their poetry from their pages it also removes any mention of their name from winners' lists. (I just checked that last night. I wasn't sure) Here are a few for you. www.poetrysoup.com/poem/a_tapestry_woman_410574 www.poetrysoup.com/poem/all_fall_down_480080 www.poetrysoup.com/poem/shadowlands_433254 www.poetrysoup.com/poem/bury_me_in_bramble_394912 www.poetrysoup.com/poem/boundless_370197 www.poetrysoup.com/poem/the_typeset_of_anais_471978 www.poetrysoup.com/poem/this_bleak_hereafter_444191 I just don't write much like that anymore. This is no longer who I am as a poet...

If you want to see one of my roses, here. www.fieldstonereview.usask.ca/article.php?article=167. And here is a dozen, lol, a bouquet. www.ekphrastic.net/apps/search?q=Cyndi+MacMillan. There are others... but I've already posted enough for you to get a feel of what my writing was and is ... and I'm still pushing myself... going elsewhere...

Cyndi something donned on me, my curiosity. First I commend you for leaving fish (trophies) for the next generation. I guess after a while it gets so routine that it's boring. Plus letting the small fries (except me) catch a fish gives them a thrill...it's fun to watch and see. I get all that. Further I look at your quote from yesterday- "I'm sharing this after having won just under 500 contests, many of them first place." I get all that. What I don't get is seeing your name on the leader board of Top 100 Contests Poets Of All Time 1-100. This I don't understand. Surely if what you said is true (I'm not doubting your word) then why didn't I come across your name?

I do appreciate all the roses I've received in the past, but I am not proud of them. I see each problem -- even the ones that won first place here on soup were bloody awful, really. But here is one I feel most proud of: https://roommagazine.com/issues/bodys-map Connie: see "in this issue" There may be a few left to purchase (?)

I see the sea, not your horizons. But don't you think it would be a nice gesture to leave some roses (winning contest samples) for the jester (me) and others.

Craig Cornish was in the ... top 20, I know, but I think he got to the top 10?... and all the poems are gone, so he's no longer on the list.

I went from about 900 poems to only 60, I think? I need to trim that list again.

I took it all away. Stripped it off. It surprised many (Ask Andrea) that I was willing to do it ... not only that but I asked TPS to change it so that the list is updated ever six months to accommodate the newest on Soup. They liked the suggestion and made the changes.
Date: 5/12/2017 4:27:00 PM
I gotta print out all I read below. haha. I kind of knew all that already but I still keep trying sometimes with poems that I should realize are not your cup of tea!! (long lines I think you especially do not like), so those are OUT!!

My attention span again Andrea! And limiting factor of breath lengths. Thanks for your ongoing support to my contests
Date: 5/12/2017 1:42:00 PM
The reason I judge immdiately is I look for that unique 'as is ' moment ' that connects me to the poet.As I say in the blog, those selected can be re-read again in later stages and often a new unique as is moment may and often does happen in round 2&3.

Asto your advice to contestants elsewhere and here ,you make a lot of sense. As you say ,much of it common sense really .Revisions may happen to poems in my contests, between rounds 2+3 .Because I don't specify form or theme the contests usually fill fairly quickly revision therefore is not normally noticeable. Also a majority of entries are from folks anthology.

I am always open for folk to submit a revised poem that did not make the winners placings to enter a later contest

but it has happened! The poet may have done some serious revision work, noted (for example) they wrote 26 lines not 25 and deleted a line or two, cut and changed it...

So, when you go to get to the 3rd round, really dig in and weigh each piece, do you take a quick peek at the ones you did not move through to the 2nd round? I know. It's a slim chance that a good enough revision was done to go from 1st round to 2nd round...

Wow , Cyndi, you know me so very well, not surprising in view of how long we have known and been poetry peers and friends to each other. If I ever was published outside of the kindle foc format I would request you wrote the forward!

Gotta go... but if I were to now submit to your contest, I'd write a 13 line ekphrastic piece that uses language concisely, but does provide vivid description, and I'd not limit my experience on the art, but add to its depth with a life observation, a personal parallel. I'd use some word play, internal rhyme, quite a bit of euphony, some allusion and be economical with my words, ensure each counted. I'd avoid clichés, with you, and mist my verse with just a tad of mystery, but I'd ensure that the content wasn't too murky. I'd ensure that the piece has a soulful tone, nothing overly melancholic, but something that starts moody, then changes, becomes uplifting... a sprinkle of contrast.

OOPS. LOL... I did submit a poem for PoetrySoup's audio contest last year. That one is still pending... I just decided to give that one a go, because it was being sponsored by TPS and I have NO IDEA of how that will be judged!!! I felt it fair of me to go for it...since it felt more level-fielded.

Remember, taai, I no longer submit any of my poems to contests here on soup. I've enjoyed doing so, in the past. But there comes a time when it's best that those who have won their fair share of contests become the judges and allow the next generation of Soupers to fill those spaces. (before some souper jumps at me, I will say this is just my opinion.)
Date: 5/12/2017 11:44:00 AM
Sure :DDD What appeals to Brian. He likes poetry that moves between what is emotional and what is intellectual. He doesn't shy away from adverbs or adjectives, but he prefers them to be used for a reason. He likes rhyme, but he does not require it. He has a soft spot for shorter verses with good imagery. In fact, imagery is what he enjoys the most about poetry. He likes figurative language, to a degree. He likes some ambiguity, but he doesn't like it too thick, too much. He doesn't mind an overabundance of gerunds or infinitives; they do not effect how he judges a poem. He prefers poems that are non-visceral or explicit in nature. He loves euphony... and flow.. Should I go on?

Many poets here do not 'study up' on the judge or the previous contests they've run, but if a poet DID, if a poet spent a few hours just reading? They would triple their chances of winning. It's not rocket science. It's like the guideline of any poetry journal which says, "you will increase your chances of publication if your read our journal.' And it's true!

So, to Brian's "How to get on Brian's Podium" Do not enter the poem into his contest until it is up to your standards. He judges immediately and he may not see a single revision that is made. His judgement is immediate.

So, that is unusual. You do not allow a poet to revise his/her work after it is entered? Before a contest locks, poets are able to revise their work. I would think PS's advice would include a reminder that poets can and are encouraged to revise their work even AFTER the piece is submitted, just prior to a contest's closure.

You judge very fairly, Chum... not sure how you took what I was saying on the other blog, but it wasn't that judges are in any way shady. I was saying that YES, we get to know each other, and YES, we can hone a poem FOR the judge of any contest here. Given time. Given attention to the poet's poetry and his previous contest placements. Easy Peasy.
