WHO WOULD YOU INVITE? - Keith Trestrail's Blog

I am an International Man of Mystery - born in Trinidad, raised in New Zealand, and living in Australia. My earliest influences lyrically were those of the Calypsonians of the 1960s, the greatest being old Birdie himself the Mighty Sparrow as well as the joyful songs of The Merrymen. Later in my teens I was struck by the power of words and language from the mercurial pen of Bob Dylan. The first poem I ever wrote was in 1975 at the age of 14 for a class assignment. I copied the lyrics from the Pink Floyd song "Money" and got a great mark from my teacher, Mrs Laird. She congratulated me on my effort and creativity (something I possessed very little of in school) and so I eventually came clean and had to re-write it. She did commend me on my honesty and choice of lyric though and did what good teachers do...engage and encourage. It could have been worse - I nearly chose a Frank Zappa song that would have been highly inappropriate! My poetry is very much like me - a work in progress! I often revisit and revise my catalogue as I grow as a writer and am grateful for any constructive advice. The real writer and talent in my family is my wife who is more an author than a poet, but she is far too sensible to bare her soul to the world. I, however, am not! I love my golf, my cricket and my Rugby League (that's a similar sport to Rugby for all my non-European/Australasian readers) and support Russell Crowe's team, the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs and the North Queensland Cowboys in the Australian NRL (National Rugby League). Go the Bunnies and go the Cowboys!

I was just sitting here twiddling my thumbs thinking about all the marvellous fun things I could be doing if I wasn't stuck here at the office and it occurred to me...

If you were hosting a dinner party and you could invite up to six famous, or not, guests who would you choose? Remember, dinner guests can clash so choose wisely. We want a fun night, not a food fight! My only requirement is that your guests must not be dead (not conversationally, although that would be a bummer) but dead as in disco!! Please resist the urge to include me among the chosen few at your generous table...mind you...I do magic tricks and can drink beer through my nose. I am also a skilled deipnosophist and pretty handy mixologist (you know, to help oil the wheels of social engagement). So who would grace your little soiree? Do tell. Personally I'm leaning towards the cast of Baywatch but I'm not proud of myself. Anyone got Pam's number!!!

Okay, here's my B List: Bruce Willis, Steve Austin, Seal, Vin Diesel, Patrick Stewart, and Howie Mandel. Can anyone pick the common thread!!!

1.) Yul Brynner. 1983 - I was helping to build an aunt and uncle's new house, near Atlanta, Georgia, USA, and for my birthday my aunt took the whole family crew to the famous Fox Theater in Atlanta to see 'The King and I.' Yul Brynner in his signature role, probably in all the world the signature role of signature roles.

2.) That year he found out he had inoperable lung cancer; died two years later. As it happens I now live on the same street as the Fox, 3 blocks away. I think of him often.

I'd love to host the following guests for an intimate gathering: Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky, Juanita Broaddrick, and Bill and Hillary Clinton!! I'd have to hide the cutlery but it would be worth it!

I like fireworks at dinner parties so I might invite say Bob Geldof and Kim-Jong-Un, and maybe The Don and Hillary, and for a giggle Will Ferrell. Oh, and Eva Mendes for the eye candy! With all the bad haircuts at the table I'll need something to dustract me...and she'll do it!

Whoa! Now that's a dinner party even if they are all dirt napping. Yeah, I'd love to host the likes of Princess Di and Elvis and Churchill and Oscar Wilde etc but I thought choosing from the living would be more of a challenge! Cheers Frederic.

I'm guessing everyone would know several of the celebrities I mentioned. Alice Munro is the best short story writer alive. Jann Arden is a Canadian singer known for her sense of humour, kind heart and wisdom. Chris Hatfield, Canadian astronaut, is funny and can play a guitar. Susan Sarandon is an activist and just one of those women I find an unmet 'sister-friend.'

This would be the 'famous' list, but as a rule breaker, I'd refuse to just keep it to six (somehow the news of the dinner party would, ahem, leak and there'd be at least another ten party "crashers"
Date: 5/3/2017 6:36:00 AM
John Cooper Clark, the finest post punk poet alive James Mudrizki, lead singer of Puressence Charmaine Chircop, to talk in her lovely Maltese way Woody Harrelson to just goof about Julianne Moore to keep it real and red Alison Moyet to share her darker side and perhaps duet with James...

Nice mix and I could so see Charmaine sitting between Woody and Julianne and they'd be listening to her! She'd go between breaking out into laughter and talking about art with Julianne.

What, no Billy Bragg? Mark, I'm seeing a different side to you here. Glad to see our darling Charmaine in there. A real mixture. If you invite me I'll bring my old Sex Pistols LP. Got a gramophone?

Keith have given your interesting question some thought ..Denis M Garrison ( my US poet friend who created the crystalline and cinqku forms) Barbara Crooker (US poet who Cyndi introduced here at a recent pub night)Jeff Lucas (English ,Christian author, whosedaily readings I follow)Ian Botham (English cricketer ,now pundit , to discuss his exploits against OZ in 1981)Jose Mourinho(Football (soccer) manager extrordinaire.Tom Hanks (who never seems to make a bad film). An eclectic selection I know Keith but tried to represent a few of my interests .Have a good day ,sport

Thanks Brian. Interesting picks. We don't talk about Botham circa 1981 down here in Oz but yeah, good choice. As for Tom Hanks, I've got one word for ya...Splash!

I am an absolute loner. That said, I would invite 6 homeless drug addicts to dinner. Matter of fact, I have done this in the past; once. And we didn't eat much but boy did I catch a really good contact buzz—guilty by association . . . I still owe them cats an apology for my shortcomings.

Keith,I would dearly loved to host a dinner party for so many PS 'acquired aquaintance' but could not confine it to six,and it would be invidious who to leave out ,so it would have to be a ' buffet type party' .I will however come back later with five from elsewhere
