Andrea Dietrich Biography

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Andrea..just a little question about your contest...can my haiku have an other form that 5/7/5? For example, a haiku with 3/8/5:D? Hugs, Emilia

I love the flow of #2 and I like the even amount of syllables in #3. I actually like what each line says. I don't necessarily like the spacing of each haiku; but I like that there is an option other than the 5/7/5 way of writing haikus.

Many of these are very good, but I like two and seven the best. I think it's just because I see so many egrets and hermit crabs in Florida and the images come through so clearly. Like number nine also. Nice selection, Andrea. I'm trying to come up with something for your contest. Have an idea, just hasn't materialized yet. Love, Carolyn

Kris, good choices! Oh, Deb. I feel the same way. People think it is so easyto do haiku? but no, to get into a magazine like Lotus, my gosh, look how you have to write. Keep in mind, none of these really is about fall per se. So you can use any of these animals or other animal and put it in a fall scene! LUv, Andrea ps Winter sure had lots of examples, and spring too!

#6 and #9 really stand out to me. In my uneducated opinion #6 is the best at capturing a scene, very clever. #9 is very clever too with the juxtaposition. These are all great for inspiration! Hugs, Kris

well sigh..what I think and I'm NOT trying to me mean or bad.. is now you used up SO many of the ones we might want to use. I for one did research on the kigo and picked cricket now i feel like a copy cat, I should just remove the poem? All of them are lovely. Way better than mine which wouldn't even get put by a 5 year old in a grocery story kiddie hiaku magizne..gah! GAH, scream

Constance, thanks so much for your practical advice. I hope I can remember to follow that next time I attempt it. And Chris, I bet you had a heyday with haiku going crazy. I want to try it too, but of course, it will be nothing like the haiku you see in this blog here haha.

Chris, I think I said where I got these haiku from inside the blog, yes, there it is: from WHITE LOTUS. Marie Summers was editor and she had to shut it down last year as she did also with SPQuill, which I'd helped her edit. The economy just did her in! I really hated seeing those magazines go. She gave me a complimentary Lotus every time they came out in exchange for my help with the Quill. I miss those magazines so much. I have read many haiku, Chris, all of them similar to the type presented here. And now I am trying to get into it myself. I wish I'd tried just once to get into Lotus before Marie stopped publishing it!

Sorry, I have no idea how to make them single spaced though? have you tried typing them in Word first then copying and pasting it to your blog? I liked the 2nd haiku you posted here though :) cool image pops to mind-- skittering hermit crabs :) hugs

Paula, that is why i gave these example. I have been reading Lotus magazine for months. It helped me to understand what haiku is. By reading lots of these kinds of haiku, you can start to see easily just WHAT they are!! Oh, and I did try the copy/paste thing, but where is the edit feature that gets rid of double spacing?? I bring my poems to my blog and they automatically double space even if they were single spaced before I copied them!! Anybody out there can you help me understand how to edit out the dang double spacing??
