Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

An Apology and Discussion on Poetry Forms

Blog Posted by Andrea Dietrich: 8/17/2025 4:39:00 PM

Recently I sponsored a contest (not yet judged) in which I made the mistake of instructing poets not to use Asian poetry forms. Here are my exact words: "This time, I do NOT want to see Asian forms or limericks in this contest." . I want to apologize to those who thought I was being racist. For one thing, I did not realize I had failed to specify Asian "short" forms. that was my intention, and I guess I did not write it that way. My contest was already posted as being for poems from 4 to 10 lines in length, and I had given examples of what kind of forms I wanted people to use. I didn’t think tanka or limerick, even though they contain five lines, would fit the criteria of my contest. That was my only reason for making that statement about Asian forms. I was not thinking of “style” of writing. I suppose Asian writers, Latin American writers, and writers of other continents have their own flair or style. That was not even in my mind.

Because I do not really see anything specifically “Asian” listed as forms for which we submit our poetry (other than tanka, sijo, sedoka, senryu, haiku, dodoitsu, etc.) I assumed the poets here would understand my meaning.I certainly did not intend to mean writing like an Asian might write in his own style of couplets or whatever. I usually prefer classic and modern poetry forms over free verse, which is why my contests often are based on “forms,” so again, I apologize for sounding racist if anybody else had a problem with that.

While I am on the topic, I am curious to know what kinds of forms are popular to those of you who enjoy writing in forms. Italy, for example, is famous for the Italian Sonnet. The French have forms such as Rondeau. The Japanese specifically gave us Haiku, one of my favorites. The Irish gave us Limericks! Many other forms exist within every culture and/or country. I know some poets who detest forms with repeating lines, but I am rather fond of Kyrielle, Triolet, Villanelle, and Quatern, all of which I just quickly searched to make sure they are indeed French forms. I guess I really love the French influence on poetry as well as the forms from Korea, Japan and other Asian countries. The Ghazal, one I rarely see here, is an early Arabic form I greatly enjoy.

I enjoy many modern forms that have been created within the past century. Etheree comes immediately to my mind as well as the many forms created by our own poetry community here at Soup. I don’t mind the modernization of sonnets, but I will probably always prefer the classic use of them.

So how about it? What are your personal likes and dislikes when it comes to actual poetry forms?

i'm not keen on repetitive forms or very short forms..obviously i like free verse, also haibun, and prose poetry which seems to be overtaking free verse somewhat; i also like sequence poems, but hardly ever see them on here, only in poetry books

yes, I knew that about you. You do free verse very well. I like to read free verse that is thoughtfully written. I think for some of us, prose is just a lot easier to do.

As below, I tend to prefer rhyming verses over syllabic forms--mostly quatrains. When I started learning about different poem forms many years ago, I actually didn't like haiku that much. But nowadays, I've come to appreciate the simplicity and meditative quality of this form. Oddly enough, my one of my invented poem form (the shichi-go-san) is very heavily inspired by haiku.

Vanya I often end up writing quatrains, but in sonnet form and other forms. That's cool you have an invented form . In which of your poems have you used it? I love reading haiku from journals of the American haiku society.
Date: 8/19/2025 9:58:00 PM
I mostly prefer rhyming formats ~ Sonnets (all types), Hybronnet, Dizain, Rhyme, Rhyme-Royal, Ottava Rima, Jueju, Rubaiyat, Monchielle Stanza, Quatern, Rispetto and of course my invented form, Quietus as well as Connie Marcum Wong’s Constanza. In the short format, I lean towards Than-Bauk rather than Haiku. In unrhymed, I like the double Etheree.

I agree with you on a lot of these forms. They are wonderful .Connie's constanza was her biggest contribution to invented poetry forms. She may have created others but she is famous all over the Internet for constanza. I think I remember your Quietus form as being a pretty cool one. Thanks for your comment

Andrea, no need to apologize, you did nothing wrong, you meant no harm and those who thought so read something different than I did. You are not racist. I am no help to you regarding forms as I love all poetry forms, and I am always willing to try one I have not written before, I think long forms are my forte, and although I do like a longer poem, I also like the short forms, Constance

Thanks, Constance. And it is obvious that you can write in any form you set your mind on. Thanks for your many challenges. They are among the most inspiring ones I have done.

I apologize to you, Andrea, for a world that makes you feel you must apologize, not that I am responsible for world wrongness, but I am truly sorry it exists. Your directions were clear and innocent. I cannot pick a fav form any more than I could pick what color I am for your contest, but you needn't apologize to the Libras on Soup! Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Ahhh, the Libras. Some of my favorite of people. Thanks for being such a very good friend, Caycay. I think you don't need forms. You are so creative, you just write!

Tanka, free verse, Limerick, are my favs. No apology needed. I didn't perceive anything offensive or racist in your contest requirements.

There's' no need to apologise Andrea, some folk can be so touchy and take things the wrong way - talk about being PC ! I have seen the same over poems in general and on poems of the day! hugs jan xx

No, but you are both great at what actually matters: being individuated individuals. Like me, y'all embrace all cultures but that's way different than PC. Even culture area where 'y'all' comes from.

I like Tanka, Haiku and Senryu + Free Verse + 4-line rhyming couplets of 7-10 words per line for song lyrics. I also like my 'Bell' form. I also like Tanka Triptych and Tanka strings. But I'll give anything a go and I enter most contests. Some of the forms are far too complicated for no apparent reason. I dislike 'stairway poems - with 1-2 word lines, one step at a time, down the page + the ASCII image stuff, especially with Haiku => sacrilege abomination!

I’m glad you asked :) Elfchen poetry is described in my blog challenge from a few months ago. An Elfchen is an eleven-word poem written across five lines. It’s also called an “Elevenie.” Elf means “eleven” in German, and -chen at the end of a German word indicates diminutive size and endearment. So, an Elfchen is a little poem of eleven words in five lines, as follows: Line 1: One word; Line 2: Two words; Line 3: Three words; Line 4: Four words; Line 5: one word. TMI? Oh my ;-) Example: https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/grace_like_rain_1415480

Hmmm. Would you like those in the marathon? I don't think I have seen any entered. Maybe a little light verse. What is Elfchen?
Date: 8/18/2025 8:15:00 AM
Overly sensitive much? Geesh... though I appreciate that you try to please everyone, it just won't happen. LOL Looking back at what forms/styles I've posted, it seems I enjoy writing haiku, limericks, any of the shorter forms, rhymes, poems with repeating lines, collaborative writing, and challenging forms (I keep trying!).

No need to apologise, Andrea. There is nothing wrong with your contest criteria. Maybe it could have benefitted by being a bit more accurate, that is: " East Asian forms" (as those you have listed). There are poetry forms specific to the African cultural heritage, but am only familiar with one, namely, Call and Response. I did a blog a while back where I compared different styles of writing per some cultural groups - eg, certain groups find it difficult to write about liminal space, etc.

Yes, good old days. At least, at the time, the sponsor was not accused of being racist. Some people should get a life as Andrea is not the only one who has to listen to such nonsense. I was also accused of being racist not so long ago in one of my blog comments. Bored individuals...

Bantu, I recall, Su. I know what you meant Andrea, didn't think it offensive in anyway shape or form. I love Asian food, I think it's Oriental which is not being used any longer.

That's right, Chetta. And I guess we think alike regarding forms in general. Maybe I too have a short attention span . Ironically, I have been known to write some really long poems, so I have no room to talk!!

I prefer short poetry forms. I lose interest in long poems. I suppose I have a short attention span. One long poem that kept my attention was "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" by Oscar Wilde. It was masterfully written.
