YESTERDAY - THE MOVIE

Blog Posted:9/2/2019 7:32:00 PM

Seeing that this website caters to a more "mature" crowd, I'm guessing many if not most of you have seen the above referenced movie.  Are you a Beatles fan?  What is your all-time fave Beatles song?  Tell us about your personal "Beatles" moment below.

Many Beatles songs are somewhat ambiguous as to meaning (try to decipher Come Together).  However, as fate would have it, John Lennnon appeared to me in a dream last night (much to Paul's chagrin, I'm thinking) and provided the true interpretation to the song - Yesterday.  You will find the explanation in parentheses after each line.

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away (thanks to a gent named Martini)

Now it looks as though they're here to stay (oh! my aching head)

Oh, I believe in yesterday (sans olives)

Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be (started on the grapefruit diet last month)

There's a shadow hanging over me (it's called - HUNGER!)

Oh, yesterday came suddenly (okay, that line's just weird)

Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say (crazy wench was like that)

I said something wrong now I long for yesterday (might have been the wench thingy)

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play (okay, so I had some fun with Rita and Sadie)

Now I need a place to hide away (heard she bought an AK-47)

Oh, I believe in yesterday (now you get the Martini gig)

Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say (feels like we've been here)

I said something wrong now I long for yesterday (it was her fault for asking me if the dress made her look fat, right?)

Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play (did I mention Lucy and Michelle?)

Now I need a place to hide away (her new boyfriend's name is Gotti)

Oh I believe in yesterday (bartender, make that a double!)

Hope everyone (including you, my lovely blockers) has a great week!

Tommyboy

From the perspective of a Songwriter/Producer, the Beatles were crucial to the development of Rock and Roll, (and other modern genres), and while I was never crazy about their sound, I love many of their songs, (and the extraordinary and humble genius that is Paul McCartney). Favorite song is easy, "BLACKBIRD", one of the most melodically beautiful and historically important songs ever written, one I never tire of. I think it's fair to say that much of modern poetry and song was inspired by, if not originated from, Beatles music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFv2fzwhuBc

Indeed, Keith, well-said! (And what Brian Wilson did for the creative process, I might add - who McCartney admittedly "stole" ideas from). Nobody has the market cornered when it comes to creativity - we all take from those who came before us, as did THEY ... that is what defines the human condition - we are our own beginning, and our own end, seeds-to-blossoms.

The Beatles only got socially conscious and lyrically aware after Dylan showed them how. Let's face it, Bob did for the mind what Elvis did for the soul.

However, you can find some very old songs of mine at BAHKU.COM ... the new project is for Hollywood Records and I'll be advertising when it's released next July. Most of those songs I recorded about 35 years ago, but there is a snippet of one of the new songs on the site "Filipina Girl". :-)

I've never recorded Blackbird, I only record originals, (and produce for others) - can't imagine the royalty applications for such a song.

To each his/her own - happy to add! Blackbird is about racism, so even beyond its musical qualities, it was very important to our culture, as few musicians or groups were even taking that subject on when it was released, and its beauty spoke to truth of its message. I have covered it many times on stage, and it always brings one of the largest responses ... and it's just plain FUN to play and sing. :o)

I good friend of mine recorded her version of it. Can't say I'm a fan of it but that's what makes the world spin. Thanks for input

You know it's funny I've never listened to their lesser known songs till the last few days. I have to say most of it I find to be "sound junk" to my ears. Thanks goodness for the standouts such as the one you note above

Speaking of "Come Together". I always found it spooky how Lennon sings "shoot me" all through the song. Yeah, he was probably referring to drug use but still.

Allegedly it was written by request of Timothy Leary so...

Okay so my first experience with the Beatles was when I was 8-10 years old, so circa 1970. My cousins were into the heavy stuff (I'm not talkin weights) and loved the Beatles. As for me, I was into Bobby Goldsboro as I recall. One night I stayed over with my cuz and we sneaked up to the attic where his older brother slept. Apparently he could only fall asleep with the Beatles cranked up. To me it made an awful noise and so no, I was no instant fan. Truth be told I'm still not a huge follower to this day, though there are obviously some outstanding songs

let me have some fun, too ... in a garden throve ...oh, so much fertile soil ... swirling from branch to branch ... she yearning for sunshine ... to her dismay ... advances coming from his mouth ... his black clouds kept creeping up on her ... she fell for the rain ... like the birds and the bees... heard her charms a keeper ... like a bee on honey ... she wanted a bigger hive ... he told her there's more than one bush ... making honey was sweet ... in another blossom ... He had a buzz

Couldn't pick a favourite, but Yellow Submarine, my father on guitar singing that to me is one of my oldest memories. So one Beatles song on a deserted island, that would be my choice.

Asking us to pick a favourite song, is like asking us to name our favourite child - not fair. The early Beatles songs resonated with me, but after Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, they lost me. Thanks for sharing this fun write with us - thoroughly enjoyed it. :)

Trying to pick my favourite Beatles song is like trying to pick my fave Bond girl - so conflicted. For me Let It Be, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, A Day In The Life, Revolution and Don't Let Me Down would be first choices but there are so many. Boy, you aren't kidding, I know all about "I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday". Nice fun write.
