How do you do it?

Blog Posted:11/13/2017 8:30:00 AM

Hi y'all,

So, I'm trying to read and comment on all my favorite poets here, as well as new poets, and I'm having a heck of a time keeping up!  I am kind of all over the place.  So my question is, how do YOU keep up with commenting on others' poems?  Is it kind of "hit or miss" ?  Besides reciprocating on comments to your poems, do you watch the "new poems" page?  Do you work off of your favorite's list?   Is your list limited to your few most favorite?

I keep coming across poets that I love but I've kind of forgotten about until I see their name again on someone else's poem!    Sometimes I think about making a list of all the poets I want to be sure to read, but if I did that, all I'd be doing is reading and commenting, I'd have no time to write any poems (which is actually kind of what's happening already lol)   So, how do YOU do it?

Thanks in advance for taking a mintue to share your thoughts on this....

it's not easy keeping up; it's a systematic type of thing; one thing I used to do was to try writing solid content for different categories. You don't have to post poetry every day. You can post every two or three days. This way your poetry could be seen in more than one area by multiple poets and in return you can have time to read more than one poem by at least five poets that you like. I've done this because I didn't start with a premium member account. write, catch the new poets, respond with comments and follow and read who you like

Becca, I can't keep up. Too busy lately. When I have time I check out my Favorite Poets list. And I enjoy reciprocating with a comment for those who were kind enough to read and comment on my work. I have often wondered the same thing. Some are so good to comment and encourage. I just kind of hit and miss. Regards

It is hard to keep up all the time. You can only do what you can only do, so I try to keep up when I can.

Hi Becca, I try to reciprocate my comments and visit the new poems page once in a while, I do try to comment on POTD, but mostly limit myself to my favourite poets... But time is never enough..

Beautiful Becca, this is not a problem but rather a simple matter of a large population of pretty darn good poesy. Fret not and read, enjoy, comment as you are moved. No need to add angst to a full life you otherwise savor. We make time for issues that compel our passions. Responding to those who have read you “voice” is the only system that seems universally reasonable. Take care, Blessed :-)))

Thank you, Wayne, these are words I needed to hear. x

Becca, I have the same problem with time. On days I do have TIME, I comment on poems and wins, but those days are few which in a way is a good thing cause it's called LIFE , I think commenting depends on how much time you want to dedicate to this site. I am thinking of setting up a schedule when I come on soup like half an hour to commenting on poems. They don't have to be long comments and then time for writing and emails and blogs eeeek, I just ran out of time!

I barely have time to come here anymore, when I do it is overwhelming how much I have missed. So many words, so little time.

Hi Casarah! I haven't seen you around in a while. I'm glad to know you still pop in now and then :)
Date: 11/15/2017 11:41:00 AM
Hi Becca:) I relate to most of your problems. Time is never on my side. I always reciprocate and I read and comment on a good amount of poems, both fav and new authors. I still find time to write, usually late at night, but I have had to partially stop posting poems in order to cope.

Yes, me too, I just can't find the time to write. I need to have some quite time to myself, and that seems to happen rarely anymore. I miss writing, and interacting with people here. It's awesome to see you here Paul!

It's good to see that I'm not the only one who struggles with this! I guess we just do the best we can. Thanks for sharing, everyone!

Thanks, Suz, I like it too, the conversations we have on the blogs. I like getting to know people more, and it makes it fun. I wish more people would join in too.

That’s true, Becca but I am glad you posted the topic because it is nice to know others face the same struggles. I think the blogs are a great way to bring people together and I wish more poets here would use it as a Forum because the poetry forum here is mainly ignored. Even if you can’t post a blog you can respond to a topic posted by a PM.
Date: 11/15/2017 7:27:00 AM
Time is the real limit for most here and the overwhelming number of poets. I have spent time reaching out to other poets who don’t, or can’t reciprocate, so now I limit my comments to those who comment on mine and congratulating poets in contests I have participated in. I sometimes read new poems and often go back to poets I follow because I enjoy their writing and just to stay in touch

I start at the bottom of the list and keep trying to work my way up, but it's an never ending process!! I really hate that I have so much housework and stuff to do this week. With my job and trying to write poems, it's really difficult!!

Becca. Great question for people. I use the comments inbox. If people think I am ignoring them, I honest to God have no time but to see only those who are reading my poems and commenting to me. Then I read them back!! In the old days they gave us THREE pages of comments to keep up. Now with only one, the names scroll off too fast. I think I miss a few poets here and there. I am SO busy right now, my head is gonna fall off. I just don't think I can keep up with family coming in a few days. Wish me luck!!!

I was really hoping to hear from you! You are the best at commenting on everyone! lol You and Silent One. But I see that you kind of struggle to keep up too, life is so busy! And yes, it's getting busier now, with the holidays.
Date: 11/14/2017 9:47:00 AM
I really struggle, Becca. This semester has been really tough for me because I'm teaching five courses and there is a lot of prep work and correcting to do. I worry that people will think I'm ungrateful for the comments I get when I don't respond, so I try my best to at least comment on those who visit my work...I wish I had time for everything's just not possible. There are very few who I make sure I read consistently because I love their poetry and they are dear friends. A wonderful day for me is a day when all my comments have been answered and I've visited in kind. Those days are far in between and few lately...Hugs

wow, you are a busy lady! It's nice that you at least try, and stick around for old friends! and I think sometimes these things are seasonal, too. I mean, sometimes we're super busy with life, and other times things are more calm. I'm glad you're still here, Eileen. Hugs
Date: 11/14/2017 7:06:00 AM
I know I don't have time to keep up with everything, and in some phases I manage to read barely anything. My goal is to read POTD, favorites list, winning entries of any contest in which I participated, and to visit the poets who were kind enough to leave me a comment. If time permits, I may read some of the new poems.

I always forget about POTD, unless I happen to come across one and see that everyone is congratulating them. I don't look at any of the lists, except sometimes the new poem list. Thanks Agnes!
Date: 11/14/2017 12:39:00 AM
Becca pick one day that you have lots of time and do all that you mentioned. Once a week or once every two weeks, whenever you can fit it in your schedule but set aside a day you can devote to commenting on other writers poetry. That's what I do because there are so many and then you have your favorite ones. It is not easy to do. Good luck Becca...

You see if you live in a shell, peek out now and then, and close out commenting you wouldn't have a problem. Right? If I ski jump off my nose towing wagons of arrogance the worst that'll happen is that the sun will come out. Let it snow, let it snow.

My comments are usually driven by my favorite list. Very seldom do i view the 'new poems' page. I usually use that list to monitor entrants in a contest I have entered ( i like see the poems I am competing against). Sometimes, a person not on my favs list will come to mind or I will see them comment on a blog, and I will go check out some of their poems and leave a comment. Unique or rare poem titles can also lead me to read and comment.

Becca, I try to keep it simple. There are way to many poets on this site to read them all.I have developed a few poets I always read and a few poets I try to comment on, I pick a new poet once in awhile and leave a comment if I think I will read more of their poems.I refuse to read poems from poets that dump 8 to 10 poems at a time. There are a few poets I interact with, some I have collaborated with and some whose poetry I admire for their skill or content. What I won't do is tell any poet that their poem is the greatest thing since slice bread.Sometimes if a poem hits me right I'll leave a short poetic line in response as a sign of respect for their skill.

I am really bad at commenting. I always think poems are masterpieces lol well I'm exaggerating... but each is unique, and (most) are beautiful in their own way. I'm in awe of the talent here, but then my comments sound fakey. so I'm hesitant to write too much. But I want to let the person know I've read the poem. I think if I didn't struggle so much with what to say in my comment, I could go faster lol Thanks Frederic
Date: 11/13/2017 12:05:00 PM
Becca, I have this problem too, "hit or miss" most times. I try to comment on new poems and those that have placed in contests, but it is difficult to be consistent. My days are busy with other things and I have limited time for writing, and sometimes reading and commenting have to take a back seat. Wish I had more hours in my day! Also, I know others are experiencing this, but it has become tedious to comment on poems because I can only do perhaps two or three comments at a time and then the web page does not respond and freezes until I refresh the page and start over to re-write my comment. I hope Team PS can fix this! Hugs, Sandra

1. Coffee 2. More Coffee. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2. ;-0 Seriously, tough job. The fave list helps, but I end up reading bunches, commenting less. Titles are a good hook. Toppa the mornin' & huggers to you ~ john
