My Biography is Coming Soon...

My biography will be very limited for now.   Here , I can express myself in poetic form but in real life I much rather prefer to be far less forward  I am a 60 year old American citizen , born and raised in the glorious South! A heritage that I am very proud of and thank God for as it is a blessing indeed ~

Currently married to my beautiful young wife(Riza) a lovely filipina  lady and we have a fantastic 7 year old son, Justin ~

I have truly lived a very wild life as a younger man but now find myself finally very happily settled down for the duration of my life~

I decided to rest here and express myself with hopes that it may in some way help others, for I see here a very diverse  and fine gathering of poets, artists, and caring folks~

Quickly finding friends here that amaze me with such great talent~~

I invite any and all to comment on my writes and send me soup mail to discuss

whatever seems important to them ~

Have you ever suddenly found a poem that struck you with awe?

Blog Posted:8/12/2017 1:18:00 PM

Last week I found and bought a book on Victorian Poetry, titled ,
Poetry of the Victorian Period, by George Benjamin Woods, with a Scott,Foresman and Company 1930 copyright.
Rather large book with 1111 pages and hundreds of poems I had no knowledge of...
Below is one such magnificent poem, titled - THE OBLATION- , (1871) by Charles Algernon Swineburne.
I found this to be a true gem and so evident of his great talent..
I know many rarely think of him as a great poet but that he was,IMHO....
As this fine poem, one of many works he authored proves..
What do you think? Feel free to comment about the author, the poem, etc.  regardless of it being high praise of him or just the opposite..

The Oblation
--- By Algernon Charles Swinburne

Ask nothing more of me, sweet;
All I can give you I give.
Heart of my heart, were it more,
More would be laid at your feet—
Love that should help you to live,
Song that should spur you to soar.

All things were nothing to give,
Once to have sense of you more,
Touch you and taste of you, sweet,
Think you and breathe you and live,
Swept of your wings as they soar,
Trodden by chance of your feet.

I that have love and no more
Give you but love of you, sweet.
He that hath more, let him give;
He that hath wings, let him soar;
Mine is the heart at your feet
Here, that must love you to live.

Thank you my friend. Swineburne should be read more methinks. One can learn much from his poetry..

I like this poem, Robert, though some words are repeated, the poet has used them effectively:) but I completely agree with Andrea too:)

Thank you my friend. I too agree that we have poets here that write that well and most of them will never achieve the fame Swineburne did. Some few may, who knows the future?
Date: 8/13/2017 9:55:00 AM
I think this poem is quite lovely, Robert. The lines are NOT repeated with the exact same words or in the same order. Three verses, and since three is a number used to show emphasis, it's charming that Swinburne did so to enhance his love. Thank you for bringing this to us.

Thank you my friend. I too, saw that it was a very limited type of repetition and served to show emphasis. What struck me as well was it seemed to be not written in Swineburne's usually style. Or maybe my memory merely thought that. As I read tons of Swineburne poems many, many decades ago. Yes, tis quite lovely indeed..
Date: 8/12/2017 9:00:00 PM
I really like it, Robert, but I am not quite as crazy about it as you are. In my opinion, I think there are poets here who can write just as well as this poet , yet they will never go down in history like Mr. Swineburne. And yes, I am constantly in awe of poems that I read. I have been in awe of some of yours, and nearly all my friends at Soup have written a poem at least a few times that I was in awe of and faved! (one poet from the 1900's I was in awe of and her name was Sara Teasdale).

ok, thanks for letting me know you will be doing Sara Teasdale, Brian. I will try to keep an eye out for it. Robert, I am glad you have read Sara Teasdale as well.

Thank you. I have read several of her magnificent poems my friend back when about in my 30's.. Always especially loved her great poems -- 1. "Alone" 2. "Anadyomene" and 3. "There Will Come Soft Rain"

Andrea just to say Sara is a poet who will feature in my ongoing daily blog clip series.Watch this space as the saying goes

Thanks for this introduction. Well met; a delight "modern or contemporary". No controversy fueled. Excellent poesy is known when read. :-)))

Thank you Wayne. I thought the poem to be a more modern type example of Swineburne's work. And one of his shortest poems I've read. As his more famous poems are great and massively lengthy affairs..
Date: 8/12/2017 2:39:00 PM
Ahh I think this is so beautiful, Robert. I love old style poetry like this, as well as modern poetry. Thanks for sharing...

You are welcome my friend. There is a place for the classic poetry that has garnered great fame for a valid reason.. Just as there is a place for modern poetry. One can easily appreciate both IMHO. EVEN WHILE FAVORING ONE OVER THE OTHER.
Date: 8/12/2017 1:53:00 PM
It's too repetitive and reads almost like a Triolet. Long live modern poetry where we have gone away from all of that.

Over sixty triolets? To me that would represent liking repeated verses very much.. Maybe Julia's dislike is a recent change?
Date: 8/13/2017 10:43:00 AM
So why do you have over sixty triolet on your page Julia?

Yes, several forms of poetry are repetitive, and that is not to everyone's taste... If I read a phrase, there's no point reading it again. I got it the first time... Poetry needs to move on.

Your last sentence at 2:52 PM does not note the fact that when writing a poem in Free Verse, NO account need be taken of 19th century mores. No harm is done thereby. Why would you expect there to be?

I appreciate you like the poem, but you did invite us to send in any negative views - refer to your last sentence in your blog.

Several forms of poetry are repetitive, how does that disqualify them in any negative way in regards to the modern poetry of current times? Poetry is a very subjective art form. Have we truly -- "gone away from all of that"? Will a house stand when its foundation is severely neglected or torn away?
