Hive
By Sarah Sloat

The magnolia tree’s alive
with bees. Blossom lapses
from a branch: music.

Sunblind in the kitchen I drop a bowl,
see it smash - slow motion - before it happens.

I sweep.
Now, petals: cool porcelain on noon fields.
Always work to be done.

The lake laps the sand bank: wavelength.
The mind succumbs to heat.
Summer slaves to stay awake.

Do bees sleep?
Pollen drunk with sun, do they
return to the queen’s clay vase
to crouch on their bellies, tingling
with honey?

Yellow jackets shot through with black
vibrate round the violets: music.

The lake is a plate on the landscape.
Work to be done.
I hum the lake.

Cyndi, its good that you introduce 'new' poets to us(see earlier blogs recently) that we are not likely to come across in the ordinary course of things. Not for me, though this time. However don't stop sharing what rings your bell .It is one of your giftings imho

For me, reducing enjambment will be me doing a 180 with my poetry! I see what she has done here... so unusual and I'm going to try it out-- it must suit the mood/tone of a poem. Slow motion!

Thanks for the drop-by, Brian. I liked the euphony of this piece, but was mystified at first why I responded to it the way I dd. I resist full stops at the ends of the line, and this is FULL of them. Only 6 out of 21 lines do not end with punctuation. I think I'm also studying this for how it is so slowed down. It is an interesting effect that I will try, soon, I think!

now THIS is what i call poetry! the imagery and wording is sublime; you can FEEL the summer heat...i'm also struck by her use of the colon: i like that in poetry...and i love question marks in poems, cyndi! i use them wherever...there's a lot in the poem: the repetition of "music", crockery throughout (bowl, porcelain, clay vase, plate)..."always work to be done" yeah, i can relate too! lol

This felt sensual to me... not in a sexualized way, I meant it is lit with the five senses... tingling with honey... love that line. Cheers, hon.

I am wondering how much revising she did, and how much just "fell" onto the page, instinctively. The assonance is art... and the consonance, too...it's like a woven tapestry, isn't it, luv? JACKet ..BLACK.. VIbrate VIolets... WAVElengths,,, SLAVE...

Hi, it is an interesting write - was it written to go with the painting? I wondered at the long and short lines and irregularity of the verses but it seems to add to the in and out of a daydream feel of it...like when you remind yourself to get back to something but then you drift off again on a tangent...very yummy lines indeed...thanks for sharing :)

Glad you liked it, Taai. I was interested in this poet's approach. She mentions slow motion in the piece, and then she slows down the poem with irregular lines, plenty of punctuation and the use of short stanzas. There is an in-the-moment feel of this that is like it's paying homage to haiku... not the form... but the intent? LOL...I do a lot of dishes. This one struck home.

Here I've been resisting question marks. Seriously, I think them so heavy a pause, and if I ask a question, its usually on the last line so the extended pause is at the end... and look at this one. Two. And I love that stanza... I've read it several times. I love the mouth music and the imagery is dreamy and deep. Bold use of end stops! How is that the last three lines work so well? Is it all the rhyme? Laaaaaaake, plaaaate, landscaaaape.. and back to laaaaaaaake. I love the last line! And why does that last line feel so much like "I sing the body electric???"
