When is a painting a poem and vica versa? with updates A+B

Blog Posted:5/20/2017 12:30:00 AM

Poetry and art have often been interposed, springing from a common source of inspiration in those of an imaginative inclination like most of us here on PS.When the two forms are combined (as for example by the traditional Japanese haiga, the haiku in picture form*see update A below) which predominates ,where do we draw the line? (no pun intended)

Here is a link to to Paul Klee's famous 'ONCE EMERGED FROM THE GRAY OF NIGHT

http://www.paulklee.net/once-emerged-from-the-gray-of-night.jsp

Is it a painting or is it a poem ..what do you think?

In more recent times Word Poems have become popular, in the form of shape and concrete poetry, but again are they poetry or art? Here is a link, what do you think (rhyme pun intended)

http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=The+Word+Poem&FORM=RESTAB

Of course there is nothing new under the sun,

an emblem poem, with a crude picture of an everyday scene, under which is a motto- followed by the poem, which is to teach, rather like a parable was very popular five hundred years ago and the best known example was George Herbert's The Churche-Floore ( see my emblem poem tribute thereto earlier this year)

And Hamish Fulton ,the walking artist had a further take on this combination with his 'Seven Days' after whom I labelled my 'fulton' form a unique shape form as a tribute to that artist . A square visual poem in letter 3x3 ,4x4,5x5,6x6 etc of which I have posted many examples in my anthology here.

So when is a painting a poem and when is a poem a painting ?

UPDATE A
Here is a link to a haiga of mine.
It combines this broken monoku  of mine
footsteps in the street - echos of a distant youth

with a piece of my artwork

Why not combine one of your haiku(aligned vertically ) with a piece of appropriate artwork/or photo  of  yours to emulate as I have done the Japanese haiga form

UPDATE B
The blurring between art and poetry by the uae of space on the page  is best known in the concrete form, as can be easily illustrated here on PS with many wonderful examples. Also the visual vertical verse ,after RA Ammons 'Chasm+Cleavage innovation is another interesting variation thereof ,as my version below illustrates
CANYAN  a vvv
           high     wide
            and     handsome
            the      chasm
             of       emptiness
           that      fills
    viduaged      hearts

It's not my bag, partly because I am technologically impaired. Back in the good old days of paper and pencil , I may have pulled it off. Most shape poems I see are very lovely to look at, but often they are not saying much. So I do not regard many of them as true poems. I liked your Canyon poem and love your broken monoku!

Paper and pencil would still be valid Andrea! I agree about the shape form but the concrete in its pure form can be innovative and can rival the Haifa.

My update B highlights the blurring between poetry and art with the use of white page space in the concrete form to draw a picture with words.

Update A illustrates my tribute attempt to the Japanese haiga form that combines art and poetry into one .

Never, one is a dog and one a cat and though one may act like the other, they are what they are.

Craig perhaps a mule might be a better analogy for this admittedly hybrid art.

Well, I've only just started to explore visual/text poetry -- not the concrete poems I've been playing with on Soup but serious attempts at conceptual poetry. I like text poems that take me somewhere with letter placement or erasure techniques that alter words. It's about what we perceive and a similar "aha" quality I enjoy in haiku... check this one out Brian www.anatol.cc/textobjekte/generation_after_generation.html#.WSAaameGPcs He's one of the best at text poetry. The ones I tried took one word and repeated it down the whole page. Then, I greyed out letters to reveal new words and those new words were a poem. It was a challenge I enjoyed, may do again, but I won't focus on this.

As far as "real" concrete poetry... the content makes the poem, to me, and if the content is a poem, then it is a poem regardless of its shape and since I read prose poetry, as well as write it (I mean written in a paragraph form, no intentional line cuts and no stanzas.)
