ARE YOU A PROSODIC POET?

Blog Posted:4/22/2017 4:18:00 AM

Without ' digging over ' again my blogs on reciting aloud  versus reading poetry can I ask in regard to the latter ...

ARE YOU A PROSODIC POET ?

when reading a poem to yourself ,here or elaewhere do you add back 'prosodic cues' that are largely absent in written language.

perhaps other aspects are more significant to you  on your first reading ....

do you read as if you are reciting ?

Do tell and  and share!

I read my poems as I write them and then when "complete" to see how they flow, how the line breaks work, etc. I also read aloud many of the poems on soup(especially they contest entries) to capture the cadence and feel of the poem using different intonations/stress....even voices.

@Arthur Thank you, Arthur! This coming week, I'd wanted to write a pub blog featuring some poems by Margaret Atwood, but I see you just posted one. Awesome.

I'll find some other gems... so many great poets out there.

I am with Agnes on the thing about having poetry read to me. I much prefer to read it in silence. I must be eye-minded but I do have a good sense of rhythm as well. Had to go look up prosodic just now to make sure it had nothing to do with writing prose. Yes, I am a prosodic poet!!

On a slightly related note: I do not like having poetry read *to me* as much as reading it myself. I prefer seeing a poem on paper (and maybe reading it aloud) to attending a poetry reading and having it only read. I am highly visual and need to SEE the words, not just hear them, to fully appreciate.

I'm a huge fan of a local poet who is Sri Lankan. He writes of being a Canadian immigrant. He loves his new home but misses his homeland. I attend his readings after purchasing his book. But otherwise, I totally feel the exact same way you do.

Sometimes, it can be truly enjoyable to be familiar with the poet's work, to already own the book of verse and have read the poem to oneself, FIRST. Then, to hear it can be nice, after everything else has been absorbed.

I agree, Agnes. Perhaps it matters to what degree each of us is "eye-minded" or "ear-minded," but hearing a poem read to us is much different from one reading the words off the printed page.

I certainly hope that everybody is prosodic, to some extent. I think a poem should sound as the writer intends - whether the poem is read aloud or silently. It should be pleasurable (or otherwise meaningful) to read, and what better way to ensure that than for the author to read it to themself?

I find the sound of a poem very important. Perhaps that is because I am a singer. I read my poems aloud when I write. It helps me feel the rhythm, which is of course especially essential when I write in meter and/or rhyme. (As an aside, I am often astonished when people mess up rhyme because you *hear* whether it actually rhymes or not) It also lets me hear whether my sounds work: do the vowel sounds go together, do the explosive consonants have the desired effect, do the alliterations actually work.... stuff like that. And, like Charlotte, sometimes reading aloud helps me get over a spot where I am stuck.

i very often speak my poems aloud as i'm writing them, particularly if i'm stuck on a line, it often helps to clarify things, and, yes, the overall sound of a poem is important

I read it aloud for sounds, euphony or cacophony, but I never focus on meter (the original meaning of prosody.) Reading it aloud often helps to see patterns, but I select words for my poems for various reasons and its sound is never the priority. Always, for me, is the what the language does to the layering or ambiguity of the verse. If a word adds more meaning, more emotion or provides depth to the poem, I will choose that word over, say, an echo effect of assonance. That being said, I find a poem works best when those two ideals converge. Now, do you know I do the same thing as a fiction writer? I read whole chapters out loud. Yes! 1) Dialogue should sound natural. If by reading it loud, I detect that the speech sounds artificial, I make changes. Also, a stumble or awkwardness when reading narrative aloud, indicates something should be changed in the sentence/paragraph. 3) As a poet and fiction writer, I need to check that I leave most poetic devices out of my writing while allowing literary devices to occasionally make an appearance on the page. Oddly enough, I have an easier time reading my poetry to myself (silently) and still hear those queues, those echoes of sounds, then with fiction. It's fiction that I'm more likely to read out loud and check for natural flow, tones and language. Ironic, yes? Cheers. Love the blog!

Thanks Arthur it was a fabulous evening and we raised funds for Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's ... I'm still on a high it's past 0.3 15 here and I'm still not ready for bed!:-) The previous show we did was in a 'proper theatre' in front of 600 people and raised over £7000 for the 2 charities :-) Today it was a much smaller venue but we still raised money and more importantly we made folks smile:-) hugs Jan xx

Its odd, I was pondering this not long ago, yep, absolutely each poem I write evolves as its written with how I want it to sound. And that changes as it grows. Nice blog.
