Roads

Roads

When it was over we had to go.
There was no turning back and for a brief moment
there was a void between the past and the future.
Our paths lay before us as many long roads each demanding a choice

Some knew exactly where they wanted to go, some had no idea
Some went where they were told and had no guidance.
Some went where they did not want to go
Some were fearful, some were bold, some prepared some not
But all went

There was no way to know what lay ahead on each road.
Although all roads ultimately ended at the same place

Each traveler bore a pack filled with learnings from the past.
Some that would help along the way, some that would hinder,
some that would allow understanding or cause confusion
Some that would incite good or bad, bravery or fear

Some roads started out together or even as one
only destined to become separate as they could never be the same
Some roads diverged immediately never to reunite
Some diverged and quickly came back together or came together at the end

Some roads crossed over others or doubled back and started again.
Some roads went fairly straight, and some curved widely
All had obstacles
And some roads just ended, too soon.

All roads would cross tumultuous rivers and tranquil lakes, lush forests and barren deserts,
Sharp jagged rocky trails and peaceful pastures, fertile lands and desolate wastelands
Some roads were solitary, others networked
Some roads seemed to go nowhere before coming into the open again
 or not

 All roads climbed steep mountains
and as well descended into deep valleys
From the tall mountains you could see forever, and the skies would be clear
From the valleys you could see nothing

And so travelers would forge ahead, or not
Succeed or fail, face triumph or tragedy
Learn but never get a second chance
And in the end all roads lead to the same place
