Luck

A die has six sides,
twenty-two dots,
and is a gambler’s favorite drug.
It’s the excitement in one’s stomach,
like butterflies,
the twitching of the fingers,
as if one were a pianist,
the need for more,
as if a yearning or hunger:
addiction.

The die screams without its partner.
and when the two are reunited,
the fun begins.
They are tossed onto a table,
expected to land on a specific number,
for another’s benefit.
Is it luck to land two even fives?
Is it luck to land on a seven to win the game?
Is it luck to not land a five and instead of six,
as the universe tells you enough is enough?

If you don’t succeed,
You may try and try again,
until you have no more green.
But just remember,
when you have nothing left,
life screams,
“Good luck.”
