Something New

I look out the car window and see the grumbling clouds accompanied by low fog
I can barely see clearly through this cataract of a sky
But hey, doesn’t everyone say to live in the moment?
Keep me wrapped up inside of this dizzy haze
Flood my mind, let me float away
Undress me, bathe me, put me to bed
Give me comfort during my night terrors, chase the prowler away
By my side, never leave
Gripping onto your arm, my tears smother your new shoes
I know no life without you
A flicker of light through the windshield startles me, this is new
I stare in awe, but I must ask…
Is this the friendly glow of a newly installed light post?
Or the despicable shine of oncoming, zooming cars?
I feel you departing
Must I face this on my own?
You exclaim that this must end, but I can’t let you go
Swallow me whole, protect me from the blaze
But no, I’m rotten to the taste
I’m forced to face this alone
I’ll see you in my head at night
Will it be in my sweet dreams or my terrifying nightmares?
Only time will tell
