Dear First Love

Dear first love,

Thanks for being there.
On the nights I can’t sleep,
On the days I feel helpless.
Thanks for being there,
In my imagination, I mean.

Thanks for seeing me,
For talking to me,
For laughing with me,
For never looking at anyone else.
For a second, at least.

Thanks for telling me I’m enough,
For living with my flaws,
And for making me feel okay,
For helping me through it all.
But wait, that was me.

You look at me, then to the other,
You’re always there, until you’re not
You’ve never said anything about me,
Never encouraged me in any way,
Because you don’t see me.

I’m just there.
I’m not important.
I’m not enough.
I’m not anyone.
But at least I’m not yours.
