Disarray

Disarray,yet It’s just three forks

I sat for a few minutes on the newly placed couch, this will do for now.
I tried to gather a list of things to do methodically yet the disarray was apparent only to me.
Everything was coming together in the new place well enough. Kids rooms completed with new beds delivered through the second story window.
I found solace the next morning in seeing my eldest actually made his bed after our “camp out” the first night.
We all slept well.
While things in the new place took shape the old place we’d called home for quite some time was not fairing so well. I saved the kitchen for last hoping the task wouldn’t be so hard. The boys and I had moved all of the heavy stuff so now it was time to choose what we kept versus donate. All seemed to go well until I emptied the dishwasher and counted my silverware. Eight large dinner forks, seven small teaspoons in which the missing one stolen with a can of soup and a bowl two summers ago from my son’s friend, eight large tablespoons and eight butter knives and five small forks, which I use exclusively.
I suppose the loss of three small forks wouldn’t be an issue for most yet I felt myself breaking inside…
“But Dad, it’s just three forks”.

It is never "just three forks" - always so much more. You have expressed this well.
