Love Revenge

you came out of nowhere
yet you had been there all along
all the time looking at me
at the place where we worked

i never took notice of you
as i played my social games
as i did my work by rote

then you called me
and everything
changed...l

i liked your voice
i liked your smile
i lived your humor

i invited you into
my heart after
a time

we played word games
of what might be ahead
i took it seriously
perhaps you could
be my man.

he does't drink,
h doesn't smoke,
these are things that
i told my friends

i said i think he
is a really decent man.

elated i flamed
i flew to please
i offered myself
at your altar
each day.

after each sacrifice
your destain
seemed to
grow

of course you took
what you got
and you were
never overly
unkind

you withdrew
from the intimate
first conversations
and i didn't under-
stand. you
acted as if this
was all in my head.

now i do understand
now i really do
your time is up
my pink slip is
on the bed.

janetta (for twila)
