Summer Solstice

Shimmering in the heat of the sun
Time stretched golden landscapes
Summer solstice, sunrise to sunset
Yellow orb sinking in fluorescent sea

My Lost Shadow

Yesterday, in bright sunlight
I turned and looked
No shadow, what a fright
Am I a ghost? So I pinched

Awakening from my dream
At the break of dawn
Getting ready to scream
Instead gave a mighty yawn

I am like Peter Pan in Kensington
Perhaps I left my shadow in bed
Be brave and carry on
Is what I said

Shadow lost and found
To life, I am bound
Yesterday's shadow was on the ground
Sewn on without a sound

The Lost Beatnik Generation

Do you remember the Beatnik generation?
Those angry young men with long hair
You could see them playing a guitar in a station
Strumming and singing without a care

Where are they now, that lost generation?
Now, the new generation by comparison
Singing platitudes, a yuppy sensation
Tame, well groomed, without passion

Looking back, I was a beatnik teen
Now I am part of the suburban scene

Easter Exodus

Every spring, I remember the Exodus story.
How the twelve tribes became free from slavery,
Escaping across the wind parted Red Sea, is a mystery.
Easter in Italy, "Pasqua" is an echo of Passover history.

In England, Easter is the modern Exodus.
Good Friday through to Easter Monday.
It's a good long weekend holiday for us,
To be spent driving on a jammed motorway.

Hurrah! At last we see the sea at the seaside.
Saturday starts with "Full English Breakfast".
Then, promenading on Brighton Pier with pride.
Easter Monday evening, time to go home at last!

Romans demolished Jerusalem's Temple for all to see.
The twelve tribes became slaves in the diaspora.
In Rome these captured slaves eventually became free
To sing the "Song of the (Red) Sea" at Pasqua.

Romantic Love Observed

From age's vantage post
Romantic love found
Life's journey bound
A duet without a sound
Waves crashing on the coast
Eyes glancing, breath by breath
Without any thought of death
From one generation to another
We merge to discover
A moment of perfect symmetry

Your Country Needs You

If children ask the question why?
Why do warriors fight and die?
We answer that we are sure
Sure that patriotism beckons us to war

Meeting and Greeting In Airports, Coach and Railway Stations

On arrival we kiss.
On departure we weep.
Lives so different merge.
Lives so similar diverge.

Extended Japanese Tanka Poem

School Day Memories
My childhood relived In memory's inner senses Touch, nose, ears and eyes Pain as I slip on waxed floor Tears at the sight of my blood The smell of iodine ointment Hearing the school bell Seeing my mother waiting Yesterday's childhood revisited Memory has no tomorrow

Grammar Rules

Veni, vidi, vici
Julius conquers us
The imperators' command and rule
Inflation and decay ends Roman Britain
Their legacy inhabits our grammar
Should reigns supreme
Over would and could
