True Neighbor

Many days have we lived together,
O John, the chief cook!
I am weary of hunger,
And you have food and water.
Are you truly my neighbor?
Then give me a morsel.

Many months have we known each other,
O Peter, the great tailor!
I am walking around naked,
And you have clothes and thread.
Are you truly my neighbor?
Then sew me a dress.

Here at your door post
Have I sat for years,
O James, the Physician!
I am sick and dying,
And you have the drugs.
Are you truly my neighbor?
Then wash and bind my wounds,
That I may be made whole.

Crown of Thorns

Wicked weavers weaved
Sharp thorns into a crown
Meant for all who frown
Where sin is conceived.

O you anointed head
Do not fear that crown
Though it may pain now
The sheep leave not unfed.

A Comely Damsel

I was a comely damsel
Made of fragile fair clay,
Pregnant with unhatched rebellion,
Beclouded with the mist of youthhood,
And on the broad path
Dreaming of butterflies.

I heard a still voice calling;
It was the Prince of Peace,
Oh, how sweet the sound!
So I followed closely.

But the sword in his mouth
Pierced my flesh and bones,
Caused my timely abortion,
And shaped me into fit -
A precious pearl for him.

What else can I say?
O Man of Calvary!
Your love has captured me.
You are my king forever!

Cobwebs

Again and again, the spider spreads
Her net on the busy highway -
Cobwebs of metal strings;
To trap the wondering fly,
And again devour a soul.

Early birds look out for worms,
But when wayward and blind,
They become victims of cobwebs;
Then all hope is lost
And the worm is spared.

So watch out, travelers at dawn!
For cobwebs have laid ambush
To charm the wayward birds,
And silence the morning melody
Of the beloved songbird.

Wretched Piper

I shall sit upon this knoll
And play my solo pipe.
My melody is salvation;
Playing in the morning,
And at noon and night.

But, woe is me!
I am a wretched piper.
For my people are deaf;
Born to hear only dirge.

I played in the morning,
But they cast on me stones.
I played at noon,
And they burnt down my hut.
Only my pipe and I escaped.

But I shall sit upon this knoll
In the cold of the winter night,
And still play the living tune -
The Salvation Melody.

Even birds have their nest;
And foxes their holes.
But I am a wretched piper,
Not worthy of a hut
To hide from the scorching sun.

Eternity

Oh, that I may look
Deep into the great beyond,
Beholding those thrones and crowns!
But the veil of nature
Has blinded my naked sight.
What vain curiosity!

Eternity bound in mortality
Awaiting the revelation of time;
When the veil shall be shattered
By those glorious thunders,
And we be found amidst saints,
Lost in that great procession,
Where the Prince of Peace leads,
And life knows no bound.
