Land of Hearts--Blitz For Contest

British wanted profit
British wanted new land
Land rich in resources
Land of ivory and coffee
Coffee British could sell
Coffee Kenyans could not
Could not retrieve freedom
Could not reason with British
British took over land
British farmed fertile soil
Soil was Kenyan birthright
Soil of Kenyan ancestors
Ancestors buried here
Ancestors grieved for living
Living like refugees
Living in fear of England
England built railway
England bolstered power
Power taken by British
Power denied to Kenyans
Kenyans displaced
Kenyans were angry
Angry since dishonored
Angry since stripped of rights
Rights taken from Kenyans
Rights only for British
British happy in new land
British prosperous future
Future lost Kenyans
Future lost hope
Hope came from bravery
Hope came from Dedan
Dedan well respected
Dedan joined Mau Mau
Mau Mau took oath
Mau Mau freedom fighters
Fighters for rights
Fighters for justice
Justice took much time
Justice took much blood
Blood shed for Dedan
Blood shed for hero
Hero was hung
Hero yet lives
Lives in the minds
Lives in the hearts
Hearts beat forever
Hearts beat freedom
Freedom...
Forever...

Listen To the Warm

"It happens just because we need to want, and to be wanted too, when love is here or gone to lie down in the darkness and... listen to the warm.” -Rod McKuen

Look deep into my Springtime and listen to the warm Leave all traces of winter behind Listen closely...and you'll hear the drip drops fall from that ice crystal fortress that surrounds your heart. I understand why it's there But now that it's melting away, it's easier to be able to Listen to the warm... The drips from your heart's fortress have formed a babbling brook With bated breath you board the boat with me Soon the topaz water's gurgling sound is in sync with your breathing And you relax Our destination? A cozy little cottage, in the middle of no where, but home to us Beneath our feet the lush green grass is speckled with wild flowers You pick a magenta one, and place it in my hair Like a couple of kids on a play date, we clasp hands and scurry across the field, our laughter echoing along with our steps We see that the door is ajar, a fluffy turquoise rug beckons us Snuggling upon it, I find the rug is even softer than it looks, as is your skin Soon the thunderous din of your heartbeat is in sync with mine Quite a rhythm section amid hushed whispers and the babbling brook outside our window
It becomes our lullaby, as we dream within this dream, we continue to Listen to the warm... Allowing the warmth to embrace us, our hearts say, that everything will be okay...

Warm Fuzzies

Warm fuzzies
and butterflies
Blushing smiles
and starry eyes

Emotional reactions
that may seem overblown
From a fairy tale land far, far away,
far beyond the grasp of those who are fully grown

But for those of us who are compelled
to sigh and swoon
at the sight of two lovers, holding hands
and strolling by the light of the moon
This...is for you

This is for...the romantics
Those who like to take their time
For him, who knows she'll get lost in the rhythm of his heartbeat
And she's assured that for her...there's no mountain he won't climb

These words are meant to remind the lady that
his lips do indeed taste like honey
And the gentleman will recall, that her smile
can make even the stormiest of days, appear sunny

These verses represent..
A picnic for two atop a grassy, secluded hill
feeding each other strawberries until
they both have eaten way past their fill.
An exchange of odes and sonnets written from his and her quill
Even after the last page is shared, candied thoughts linger, still
Thus sparking a poetry slam for two, reciting heart shaped rhymes at will

Some still gleefully agree
that even in the day and age that this is
a luscious... lingering,,, kiss is...
a soft...soothing... bliss is...

Warm fuzzies
and butterflies
Blushing smiles
and starry eyes...

Mellow Spaces

The music begins, then the singing
I close my eyes, and even my ears smile
inhale.. humongous exhale, arms raise to the heavens
then my hands pose, lingering in jazz dancer's style

My mind begins to fly
Or perhaps as I glimpse the shadows going by
it's actually birds, yes birds fast forwarding to the rhythm
flying past majestic leafy trees beneath a dusky sky

Then the speed slows from 78 rpm
to 33 and a third
my body relaxes a bit more while I sway
becoming hypnotized to each note to each word

The clouds are outlined in smoke
a gentle breeze blows against my face
dancers appear, adorned in loosely draped gray chiffon
enchanted by the music, they swirl with finesse and grace

The wind picks up, so much so, that now, I'm flying
the shadowy scene about me is racing
it's as though I'm soaring through a vortex
unfettered, perhaps it's a virtual paradise that I'm facing

Feeling mellow with this
Byrd's band flickers in and out, the notes float and transcend
the song finishes but the music doesn't, not yet
I pen this piece as I peace out, so the music doesn't really end...

4 Walls

If these four walls could talk they would say..
I'm so sorry that I'm driving you crazy today
there's so much on my chest, I've much to convey
And no one will believe you if you repeat this any way

Leaving is futile, I've locked the door
Stop screaming and crying, don't wanna hear it any more
Help yourself to some popcorn, I promise I won't be a bore
You'll find that recliner to be more comfy than wallowing on the floor

But...as you wish...floor could use a good buffing, but I digress
That's chalk residue beneath you, and it outlined a macabre mess
I've developed 5 more cracks just this morning, I just can't handle the stress
I've...witnessed a murder, and to this I must confess

There is a back story to this, and this room is the center of the tale,
Host to many extravagant galas, known for entertaining on a grand scale
The most extravagant to do, was just for two, Saturday date night, held without fail
They supped sumptuous steaks, sipped bubbly ale, and read each other like braille

But the only thing they read that last night was the riot act
Accusations of infidelities loosely based on fact
Text messages, instant messages, emails hacked
He was tired of the Saturday night charade, and soon his bags would be packed

You're going to regret using me like a pawn she said
Saturday night special aimed at his head
Then she mouthed that pistol, and ingested it's lead
Their last night spent together in this room, laying there dead

That wall over there was painted a darker blue because it had the biggest splatter
Somebody really needs to replace the window in that other wall, the first bullet made it shatter
Gee I feel so much better now, actually looking forward to new owners... So, what's the matter?
Are you still interested in making a bid, or was that just idle chatter?

Backwards

Feet weary walking in reverse retracing finding wisdom by treading through dried muddy footprints blood stained memories lessons relearned forlorn tears cleanse painful yet needed now moving forward feet

Response To How Do I Love Thee

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

*************************************

Should I count all the ways that I love you?
There are oh so many ways to revere
Must be another way to assess, dear
If I use a ruler, what would ensue?
Summating inches, would that ever do?
Are "he loves me" petals worthy entries?
Perchance, peaceful picnics under zen trees?
How do I love thee, is this deja vu?
Already measured the treasures you are
The secret allure of black diamond eyes
That smile...radiates gold like the North Star,
Rubied heart... can't start to deduce it's size
Inaccurate calculations thus far
Even in sunset, ever the sunrise

I Fell In Love With a One Eyed Minion

You read the title correctly,
I realize that everyone's entitled to their own opinion
But, please read the entire story before you decide
Yes, I fell in love with a one eyed Minion

Like most of you I really enjoyed Despicable Me
and in it there was this one little guy
a bit shorter in stature, hair parted in the middle
Deep sigh. love at first sight with a Minion with one eye

His name was Stuart, and he was so playful and intelligent
I knew I was smitten, but alas he wasn't real
And although I could say the same about some humans...
I could not show this Minion fellow how I really feel

Wishful thinking flooded my mind
as I curled up in a comfortable chair, tired, but not sleepy
Next thing I know I appeared to be computer animated...
yet three dimensional...and yes I'll admit, it was a bit creepy

And there they were, a pack of Minions in the park
surging forward as one, looking for another leader
Then I saw Stuart nudge Bob and say, "That's her!
That's the babe that was checking me out in the theater!"

I was surprised that his speech lacked that familiar Minion dialect...
Stuart stood on a bench, and gave me the sweetest little kiss
He said, "I have noticed you in the movies, dozens
of times, but never thought I'd see you like this!"

Initially embarrassed that he knew I've watched him so often
the shame subsided as I spent the day at his place
We dined on banana flambe...and drank frothy banana shakes
Afterwards he serenaded me with a ukulele, with such style and grace

After dark, we took a stroll back to the park
Laying in the grass, I couldn't decide which shined more bright
the stars in the sky, or the twinkling in his eye
How I wished it could be this way every night

Stuart told me he thought humans were a glorious species
and that he loved me with all his heart
if it weren't for our differences in composition
we would never ever be apart

Then the sky and the ground began to buckle
All at once I was taken completely unaware
Instead of snuggling on the grass
I was reclining on that comfortable chair

I haven't seen him that way since,
I guess blu ray or dvd will just have to do
Although I miss him terribly, at least we had that one delightful day
Yes, I fell in love with a one eyed Minion, you do believe me..don't you?

Where's Hope - Split Haiku

Without hope, what then
Wander sans reason
Months
pass without season

Vacancy sign reads
What is all that knocking for
No
one's home any more

God keeps on knocking
He says it may be dark now
Search
for light anyhow

That glimmer will spark
Illuminating your mind
Pain
Is not all you'll find

You'll find those missing
seconds, minutes, days, weeks too
Time
still exists for you

You'll survive the months
with love for each new season
God's
hope is the reason...

Angels In Many Forms

God blesses us with angels
Not thinking of fluffy wings or mystical flying things
I'm thinking of those who help you beyond measure
The life changing, life saving acts each selfless soul brings

Could be that aunt who always highlights the positive side of chaos
Wanting you to see that there is always a light
Or the uncle who praises you, but will not sugar coat a major misstep
Initially angry, you do your best to correct, for you know good and well he's right

Or the friend who keeps in touch thru years and miles
seems to instinctively call when you really need to vent
The pal who centers you, knows what to say to bring you back to yourself
when life has taken hold, making you forget where your true self went

Those strangers...who defend you when you're unjustifiably attacked
unapologetically righting what's morally wrong
The first responders, putting their lives on the line to save yours
such brave hearts, so miraculous when they come along

The one in a lifetime love
That romantic dream come true
Your complement, your eternal partner
The sweetheart that heaven sent just for you

And when those selfless souls pass away
Even within another realm, those angels continue to protect those they hold dear
Countless ways they communicate care and caution...you can see
their loving foresight in hindsight, though they're no longer physically here

God blesses us with angels
Not thinking of fluffy wings or mystical flying things
I'm thinking of those who help you beyond measure
The life changing, life saving acts each selfless soul brings
