The Music of Colors

It originates with a blank canvas.
White.
Eerie silence like snow drifting
A fermata.
Silence is music too.

Then a sonata of yellow breaks the spell.
The arpeggio of a laugh
The trill of the buttery sun shinning through a canopy of leaves.

Then red timbre intercedes warming the tone.
The fortissimo of a polished apple
The triplet of a beating heart.

The rubato of blue instantly tones down the orchestra.
A rippling pond plays a chromatic scale
A tear drop strokes a resounding note.

Then,
White again.
A last tacet.

Don't hear it yet?
Look closer.
And listen.

Freedom of a Child

When life was easy
Because you knew it all
Rainy days weren't a hindrance,
It was just the ocean's way of sending a postcard.

Instead of treading through sludgy puddles like it's a minefield
Happily splashing through them,
Because the wetter the better.

And when the sun comes out
And a vibrant rainbow pierces the clouds
It's not the refraction of sunlight through raindrops,
It's simply magic.

As the sun gradually disappears into the endless horizon,
It's not time to mourn over the passing sun,
Because now it's the stars' turn to dance.

As those moments of puddles and rainbows grow more limited
Make sure to catch the moment
To live free
With freedom only a child can possess.

The First Unforgivable Sin

When the first murder was committed
The weapon was useless
Knowing that the soul is what animates people
He started stabbing arbitrarily at his victim’s body
With the logic that the soul dwells throughout the body, he thought that with one gash the soul might seep out
But he didn’t succeed
Until a stab wound reached the victim’s heart
And that was the end
War is random stab wounds throughout the body of the nation
Unnecessary pain
The point of war is to get to the soul but it’s hard to find where the heart of the problem is
After all these years we still haven’t learnt from mankind’s first unforgivable sin

Those Above Us

Lay on the fresh grass
Look up at the deep dark skies
The window to infinity
And gaze at the twinkling stars

As the world you know is cast into the shadows
One by one they slowly appear
A strong beacon of hope and light
At the darkest of times

But those celestial crystals never truly disappear
When the sun outshines them
Or the majestic clouds overshadow
They are only hidden, they still watch down on us from above

When we don't need them
We often forget them
But when the darkness threatens to envelope us whole
The stars are there to remind us of those lighter moments

And those memories in the darkness are enough to survive the night
Because the stars symbolize so much more than constellations
They symbolize hope, strength
And above all else a reliability only outmatched by the divine Himself.

Piet and the Search For a Heart

There was something the matter with Piet
Everyone knew it
Yet no one knew what
Of course it took a genius to find out.
When Doctor pressed a stethoscope to Piet’s small chest
The room was filled with utter silence
Piet was a smart little boy
And remembered from biology class the importance of the heart
“Why, it’s the most important muscle in the body
Without it I am as good as dead!”
And Doctor agreed
So Piet went out on a mission to find a heart
(For he was much to young to die)
He saw an old man waiting for destiny to take its stand
But the old man treasured his heart above all else
And although Piet attempted to take it
He was unsuccessful in his endeavor
So Piet continued in his odyssey
He saw a weak baby struggling for life
“I’m sure he wouldn’t mind if I took his heart”
But the baby claimed his heart was anchoring him to life
It took one look at his mother’s gaze him to convince him to never give up
Piet was now impressed
“Having a heart seems to be more important than I thought”
He sat on a bench and realized sadly
If he didn’t have a heart
That must make him dead
A warm liquid began to glaze his eye
(Yes, a tear)
As that drop pooled, lining his lid
Time started to slow down
The drop began to trail down his cheek
His hand immediately touched this foreign liquid
And then time stopped all together
And in the silence of things
There was a thump.
It was soft but it was there.
Another thump.
Piet pressed his hand to his chest
It was there!
A living creature.
In the search for a heart
Piet didn’t realize it was there the whole time
It only needed some awakening.

Tomorrow

When the sun dips down into yesterday's oblivion
When the darkness creeps in
Extinguishing happiness, denying any hope,
You find your way.
Guided by the pale glow of the moonlight
And led by the stars of those long dead
Your trained eyes never stray from the never-ending horizon
Where the flickers of light begin to show.
Keep watching
Hope is in sight.
