Manners

A woman sat down beside me today.
The bus was crowded and cold.
She was small and timid,
Much less young than old.
I smiled politely,
As we're all taught to do.
She said "Why are you smiling?
I didn't speak to you."
I said, "Manners, you ever heard of those?"
She looked undaunted, and just ruffled her nose.
"Noone asked you to smile,
be polite or talk.
I thought I wouldn't be bothered,
I should have just walked."
I said, "I'm sorry mam. Can I help you somehow?"
She grunted a "no" and dropped her brow.
I wasn't giving up, I thought she needed a friend.
I said," I'll get you some coffee if we get off together."
"I don't want your coffee, or your chit-chat kid,
I just rode the bus to get out of the weather.
Leave me alone, all you kids are no good.
You're all a waste of time!
I hate all you brats,
Mind your business not mine!
Having read dozens of books with the "mean old lady" cliche'
I never really got it until my bus ride today.

The World

You looked at me, I looked at you.
With tears in our eyes, we said "I do."
It was forever, I knew it would last.
We stayed together and watched the years pass.
As I stand here beside you , I know it's true.
I wouldn't have known love if I hadn't known you.
You are my world, you are my love.
I thank the Lord who watches above.
He sent me you, so long ago.
How I made it till then, He only knows.
We watched our son grow from a boy to a man.
After all these years you're still holding my hand.
We're growing older, our hair has turned gray.
Our son has found love and I hope today..
She'll be his world, she'll be his love.
Blessed by the Lord who watches above.
To have and to hold, until life is through.
He will love her like I love you.

Children

A mother told me to love a child is divine,
I didn’t understand until I had mine.
Divine, though she is, still there is more.
She is wonderful, beautiful and rotten to the core.
I would tell people to love a child is divine,
But I feel so much more when I look at mine.

Questions

If a man leaves,
Does the love leave?
If a woman cries,
Does her chest heave?
When she sees him,
Does her heart race?
When he thinks of her,
Does he miss her face?
What of their love,
Does it just go away?
What of a heart,
Does it live another day?

Family

Three times blessed
Never acknowledged
Watch the changes, through selfish glasses
Be alone with questions
Forced to grow
How quickly we learn
Pretend to be all
Feel like nothing
Take no blame, give to others
This is our life with you our mother.

Departing

Love leaves, longing, lingering…last chance.
Time ticks too till things taken…turn black.
Missing means mourning many moons…my mistake.
Wanting wishes wonderful would want…what is.
Regret rings ruefully readily reliving…real sorrow.
Forgiveness fathers forget-ness for…fleeting moments.

What You Are

You are the love
A lifetime without
You are the water
A lifetime of drought
You are the feeling
A lifetime to feel
You are the moment
A lifetime to steal
You are the dream
A lifetime of sleep
You are the love
I wish to keep.

Living On

She has so many things
I live in her eyes, they are me
Smile and I am won
Laugh and it is clear
Her little nose, her pink ears
Time shows more, even more
She has so many things, a lot of them, mine.
