Brick House

Brick House

We call them bricks.
Cold, hard and clueless.
Stacked together, creating a thick wall of ignorance.
Unwilling to learn, resistant to change,
Eyes dull and confused,
with faces as dry as the day before.
Dragging themselves to their designated seats,
not expecting much from their day.
No energy, no enthusiasm,
no imagination or curiosity.
Just there to fill a space.
We shake our heads at the occasional shout of a wrong answer,
a spit ball, or a fight.
Helpless and hopeless
we go on, speaking to no one in particular.
No amount of planning can spark their interest.
No measure of strategy can help them to understand.
A last glimmer of hope concocts ideas of action.
Hoping to make a difference;
to convert their mentality from complacency to achievement.
Our attempts are rejected.
With deliberate defiance we are met with objection.
The lack of support produces disappointment and regret.
A new found disdain hovers over us.
Optimism is a fleeting thought.
Helpless and hopeless we go on,
Speaking to no one in particular.

Mother Africa

She is not just images of starving children with bellies bloated with air
She is not just dry faces and tattered clothes with flies circling her hair
She is not just voodoo priestesses
drinking the blood of a fowl
She is not just heartless warmongers
who shoot the innocent down
She is not just an impoverished land consumed by HIV and AIDS
She is not just a late night TV ad
requesting 15 cents a day
She is not just bare breasted mothers carrying infants across her back
She is not just corrupted dictators
and genocidal maniacs
She is not just elongated necks
adorned with rings
She is not just lip plates
and other "unnatural things"
She is not just steamy jungles
overrun with apes
She is not just shabby huts
all in disarray
She is not just Sarafina
or the miniseries Roots
She is not just hotel Rwanda
or Shaka Zulu
What she is, and will always be,
is the mother of civilization,
creator of humanity.

Night With You

Night with You

Damn this guy is cute,
from his dreadlocks to his boots,
daydreaming of being his boo,
and he's checking me out too.
With a few quick looks over his shoulder,
he finally walks over,
feeding me lines I've heard time and time,
like what's your name, age and sign.
We talked and talked until there was nothing left to talk about,
when he had to leave, I couldn't help but pout.
A smile soon returned when we exchanged numbers and such.
We both made promises to keep in touch.
Hour long conversations for about two weeks,
that's when we finally decided to meet.
From the movies, to dinner, to his house we went,
thinking to myself, this guy is heaven sent.
Comfort like we've known each other for years,
on cloud nine without a care.
Sweaty palms and butterflies,
gazing into his eyes made things intensify.
He grabbed my hand and led me to his room,
asking myself, if this is happening too soon.
Worry turned to passion with the meeting of our lips,
watching seductively as my pants he unzipped.
Like a love whirlwind things happened so quick,
lust and ecstasy were thrown in the mix.
An hour passed when we finally winded down.
Panting and heavy breathing were our only sounds.
Satisfaction drifted us into a solemn sleep,
dreams of our future were interrupted by an alarm beep.
I awoke the happiest I'd been in a while,
turned to my left and was greeted by a smile.
Floated home and waited for a call.
Unfortunately that didn't happen at all.
Three days passed without a word,
his voice mail recording was all I heard.
I thought he was different, thought he was true.
Back tracking our night to see if there were clues.
I won't pretend that I'm not hurt,
there were some nights I even slept in his shirt.
But I've moved on, there will be others,
The world is filled with good looking brothers.

The Expendables

Brown and black boys
Gunned down by the boys in blue
The countless video footage seen
Every night on the evening news
It's the same story;
Different times, different places
But what they have in common
Is the pigment of their faces
We give our sons rules
Advice we think will save their lives
But pulling up sagging pants
Has not helped them to survive
We say watch your words
And be sure to comply
Do exactly what you're told
Or you just might die
Instead of getting justice,
Police are justified
No sympathy for the victims,
Instead they are vilified
Past criminal histories
Irrelevant records exposed
The innocent made to look guilty
By what the media disclosed
Things have changed
And yet remained the same
Overseer has turned into officer
Handcuffs replaced the chains
How many of our mothers
Will have to bury their sons?
Before we come to realize
We are public enemy number one.

Yummy

Caramel apple red delicious
candy flavored pheromones
Lemon drop honey kisses
flutter softly on my collar bone
Raspberry love bites
saturate my juicy fruit
Creating urges of lollipop lust
satisfying my sweet tooth
Chocolate covered banana boats
topped with cherry lips
Fulfill my insatiable appetite
with luscious licorice licks
Cinnamon swirls of pleasure
move slowly down my spine
Marshmallow fluffs of ecstasy
settle comfortably on my mind
Drizzle my dreams
with cotton candy memories
Tickle my thoughts
with butterscotch energy
Fill my heart with almond joy
caress my mounds with your fingers
Arouse my savory soul
with strawberry mango whispers.

Perfect Crime

Like a thief in the night
Out of plain sight
You left as quickly as you came
You stole my heart
Right from the start
There was no one else to blame
You robbed me of my love
And all of the above
You left me feeling empty
You took what was mine
My heart and my time
And all I have left is a memory
Your mask hid your face
Your intentions and my fate
I didn't know the real you
I've put on the pads and locks
Started a neighborhood watch
To warn others of what not to do
I should have called the cops
The love special ops
You are America's most wanted
My heart is now caged in
Refuse to be a victim again
I will forever be daunted.

Lies

The lies spill effortlessly out of your mouth
creating a noisome, foul odored puddle of bull
where it seethes and bubbles
and eats through the floor of trust
I once had for you.
Your heart beats noisily
thumping boisterously through your chest
producing ripples of panic and guilt
drowning out the last thoughts of hope
I once had for us.
Clenched teeth hold back chaotic tears
grinding on the enamel of hysteria and rage
exposing the dark cavity of repulsion
Crushing the last bit of sanity
I once had.

Chester, Chester

You have no idea what you've done to me
the damage you have created
the broken person I have become
No idea how it has affected me
the relationships that have been severed
my self worth diminished
You have no clue how much you've changed me
the distorted way I view the world
unable to trust, to love
Clueless to how you've molded me
into an inverted, confused girl
struggling with doubt and rebellion
You don't know how much I hate you
you've destroyed what I could have been
the happy, confident person I long to be
Don't know how much you've hurt me
nightmares and fear follow me
the flashbacks occur all too often
All for a little thrill
a selfish need for satisfaction
not taking into consideration
my feelings, my resistance
not realizing that I will one day be a woman
scorned and guarded
All for some instant gratification
that didn't mean much to you
the scheduled violations
when no one was around
the sour feeling I got in my stomach
every time you touched me
So all should be forgiven?
my emotional trauma should just be discarded?
I should move on with my life?
It's not that simple
I want you to feel the pain I felt
I want you to hurt like I did
I want tears to stream from your eyes
as I've cried many nights
Then and only then
can I begin to heal.

Goodbye

It is with a heavy heart
that I have to say these words,
I've given it much thought
and they must be heard.
You've never appreciated
all I've done for you,
I've cried many nights
trying to get through.
When I question
your love for me,
Vague answers
are all I receive.
It's like pulling teeth
to get you to open up,
I'm constantly knocking
on the doors you shut.
You've used me up
until I had nothing left,
Emotionally drained
There's now a void in my chest.
Whenever you need me
I'm right by your side,
But when I call
you don't have the time.
A one way street
is what I seem to be on,
Reciprocation
is a concept too far gone.
I've had about enough
of giving you my all,
Only to get
Neglect and disregard.
And like a caged bird
I'm aching to be free,
Looking out for myself
No longer bound by loyalty.
You were the main character
in my book called life,
but this chapter has now ended,
so to you I say,
Goodbye.

Survivor

You weren't angered when you got the news.
You didn't even shed a tear.
You held your head way up high,
And faced it without fear.
You found the strength to comfort us,
In your time of need.
Never showed a sign of weakness.
You never looked for pity.
You've endured the pain of radiation;
Prevailed through each agonizing day.
Suffered through countless medications,
And triumphed along the way.
With the support of family and friends,
And your unwavering faith in God.
You've survived what cancer brought into your life,
And beat all of the odds.
