My Teacher

Life is a restless ocean
I am a vessel adrift,
Life is a searing furnace
I am a broken twig.
Life is a searching stormwind
I am a tail-less kite,
Life is the night approaching
I am a bird in flight.
Life is a skilful hunter
I am a creature, wild,
Life is a patient teacher
I am an ignorant child.

My Beautiful Afro

MY BEAUTIFUL AFRO

Said you liked the real Jamaican coffee
You liked it black,
No cream, no sugar
But you liked it hot.
My heart stirred,
Best pick-up line I ever heard;
You spending time with me
Buying me gifts
Oh this is bliss!

It's been a while
I realize
You have no family or friends
Or else, you're keeping me from them.
Your lame excuses cannot make amends
So just be real, just don't pretend.

Our private world has been upset
Your family and friends will not accept;
Your cream with my coffee
Just does not mix
Now it's your world or this.
To choose is to lose
Yet I must refuse
No cream will lighten my coffeed skin
Or rob my beautiful Afro of its kink.

Goodbye.
I'll always remember that you tried.
What you are able to see
Is who I am inside
For me to change would be a lie
So I'll choose to keep my coffee, my afro and my pride.

In Retrospect

My childhood was difficult but happy
For there was enough grass
To cover the rocks
And the butterflies always came out
After the rain.

Broken Heart

Broken Heart

I was standing right there in your corner
With you
With all the creepy cobwebs dangling and
The scary spiders lurking overhead.
I rubbed your back when you were
Feeling blue
And I stayed true.

It was my tears that fell to ease
Your pain
It was I who got soaked when you
Were caught out in
The rain
Time and again.

Now here I am standing in my corner
All alone
The tables have turned, my heart is sore
But I am facing the creepy spiders
On my own
And you are gone.

So many questions to ask you
Like why?
Where did you go, how could you leave me at this time
With no goodbye
Or even an ill-bred lie?

I know somewhere in this a valuable lesson
Is being taught
I know someday I'll learn it and accept that
We're apart
I know Time's practised hands will one day mend
My broken heart
And I'll make a fresh start.
