The Lake

In an evergreen forest
Surrounded by a lake
I owned a little cabin
Where my love I did take

Moss crept on the walls
Of the crudely built home
But in silent serenity
We could be alone

She loved it more than I
That place beside the water
She wanted to stay forever and a day
Or whatever proved to be longer

Simple living
Minimal care
Clean country breathing
In the pine scented air

The water rippled
And slowly swayed
During all hours
Of the night and the day

The woods teamed with life
And the trees filled with leaves
Birds fluttered along
In the gently blowing breeze

We couldn’t escape
This beauty astounding
We became one with the lake
Our hearts matched in their pounding

Enamored were we
With our quiet possession
But this love that we had
Turned in to obsession

Scared of the threat
Of having to leave
To go back to the world
Of death and disease

We clung to the feeling
Of everlasting bliss
Because while we were here
We could never resist

But late one evening
As I sat by the fire and drank
My love, afraid of departing
Walked in to the lake and sank

I realized too soon
That I had to leave
And forget all about
This so called serene

For it was not an earthly place
Yet not entirely fictitious
Just outside of reality
If you believe the superstitious

That cabin by the lake
That my love knew so well
Called her soul to rest
Was it Heaven or was it Hell?

The Wood

There is a very large wood, right next to my house
Twas a very good wood, as I understood
And it held every creature from lion to mouse

I once saw a krumpstaple as big as a table
And it smiled at me and waved
But on its back was a frickamafrack
And I saluted him for being so brave

You see, frickamafracks are often attacked
By the enormous breed of krumpstaples
But both of the beasts would certainly feast
On the trees when it oozes its maple

The maple in these trees will quickly freeze
If you breathe on it too long
So the animals lick it and slurp it and pick it
Before anything can go wrong

My mother and father when they wish to bother
Tell me to stay away
“You’ll surely get lost with the trees all so crossed”
They look at me and say

But I know that I should go into the wood
Because it makes me happy
And the krumpstaples and their backs with the frickamafracks
And the trees that are ever so sappy

Can you keep a secret, promise and keep it
Of the wood that sits by my house?
I’ll let you come play any time of the day
With the the creatures from lion to mouse

Now that it’s settled, shall I put on the kettle?
My green tea is especially good
Let’s have a picnic with tea and a breadstick
In the fabulous magical wood!

That Old Trombone

A rusted brass skeleton
Sleeping in a leather sarcophagus

Echoes of a symphony
Escape into my ears

Yearning to be played
To have breaking, bloodied lips kiss it once more

Soured by time
Decades of silent slumber

Coins, artifacts of a lost world
Collect in the dust and nicotine-ed air

I find myself humming along to our songs
Destined to lose their rhythms and notes

Two moments in history
Soon to be forgotten

Moth

Bioluminescent beauty
I am drawn to the hue

I know nothing but the gleam
A pale moonlight blue

I flutter along
Floating on the wind

Enraptured in its gaze
This is all I’ve ever been

A curious creature
Hungry for a path

Maybe it can guide me
To a safe way home, perhaps

Before, I turned to the stars
I got help from the moon

But this light before me
Appeared so usefully soon

Convenience, it is
How kind to me it’s been

A guiding friend
Beckoning me in

Closer and closer
I fly into its haze

It bites and shocks and kills
And then I burn away

The Foolish Robin and the Lonely Old Man

It was early in the morning
I had my cup of tea
When a little robin landed
Beside me peculiarly

Outside on the porch
We talked, him and I
I taught him how to speak
He taught me how to fly

We glided over deserts
And perched atop jungles
We saw men and women talking
Beneath us just a mumble

We saw Paris and Rome
Geneva and Berlin
We saw wonders of the world
Places no man has ever been

I wiped a tear from my eyes
As we landed back home
For I had seen miracles
Which I had never known

Fly away I said
To that little brown bird
Go away from this place
It is not safe, take my word

But he did not listen
And he stayed right by my side
He taught me how to live
I taught him how to die

Thus is the way
With humans and robins
I am afraid it all ends
In a fate far too common

So fly away
While you still have a chance
Less you end up like the foolish robin
And the lonely old man

My Camera Always Lies

Flipping through the pictures
Memories on display

Radiant recollections of the forgotten
A shrine to the past

Pain in absentia
A domain for delirium

Not existing in the real world
A masquerade, a façade

I yearn to be like the pictures
Behind the cheap plastic screen

To live inside
Impossible

The Lovers

Bask and bathe
In river red

Lay down to sleep
In fire’s bed

I tell a tale
Of lovers lost

A legend of death
At twice the cost

Muse of beauty
So lovesome indeed

A look at her visage
One’s heart doth soon bleed

Prompt and denying
Through the sea of her suiters

She saw a man leaving
But her words left sooner

Come, she told him
Her voice hit his ear

He turned his head quickly
And she drew him in near

She whispered sweet nothings
And he fell every time

She sang him a song
And she rhymed him a rhyme

She had him hooked
For he was now so in love

He could not quite tell
Whom she reminded him of

Someone he knew
Of great fame, she was

An angel, he thought
Or something above

But in fact he was wrong
And soon he could tell

She was no angel
But a shadow from Hell

He remembered her quick
And tried to draw back

He had known her before
She was dead, he knew that

His former flame
Whom he had burnt out

Yes, he was sure this was her
Of this, he had no doubt

He had gotten bored
But she loved him so

When he told her to leave
She did not want to go

He snuffed out her light
And buried her deep

Now the woman was here
And began to quiet weep

She grabbed the man’s arm
And opened up the floor

Engulfing them in flames
And they both were seen no more

Bask and bathe
In river red

Lay down to sleep
In fire’s bed

I finish my tale
And plead you of this

Remember your past
I ask, I insist

I Thought of You

I thought of you today
In a special type of way

I was walking by a garden
“Discount plants for bargain”

I decided to enter this habitat
And I thought of you, who would have expected that?

When I saw the purple pansies
The ones that you had fancied

Or when I smelled the twirling tulips
I began to feel quite foolish

The dainty daffodils
Offered me a thrill

I kissed the reddening roses
Just as I started to notice

These flowers, all bloomed
I thought again of you

Of your beauty, your love, and your hurt
My forever flower, planted in the dirt

Calendar

In January
With Mother Mary
We wed down at the chapel

In February
Cold and airy
Your cheeks as red as apple

And in mid March
Under a golden arch
You said we would have a daughter

But then come April
A spring too fatal
For we had quickly lost her

In late May
I heard you say
We would be forever

Although in June
It came to soon
We were not together

At the end of July
I saw you cry
Through your open window

Then in August
You never saw this
I threw away your pillow

In September
I still remember
I got the call I dread

And in October
No longer sober
They found you cold and dead

In November
To control my temper
I enjoyed the end of fall

Lastly in December
Your darkened dying ember
I could not picture you at all
