Elaine Russell Poem
The Childless Mother
You once had a mother
And how was she?
She was gentle, kind and caring,
As gracious as could be.
And you?
You played house,
You dressed your dolls,
You took them for walks in their prams
You gave them their bottles,
And you rocked them to sleep.
But now, you know,
You’ll never be a mother,
You experience anguish, hurt and pain,
Which our loving heavenly father
Takes away again and again and again.

Elaine Russell Poem
They’ve been dancing in the garden all afternoon,
Flashes of red and brown.
Moving away from and then back together,
Flirting and flighty.
She hid in the vivid green hedge ,
He followed her there.
Flurries of excitement,
He chased her out and across the flat manicured lawn.
Afterwards,
Stillness.
She disappeared.
He looked about impudently,
Then swiftly flew away.

Elaine Russell Poem
You faked friendship with me
And my crime was being English
You feigned interest in what I had to say
And my crime was being English
You sarcastically smiled at me
And my crime was being English
You omitted to give me information
And my crime was being English
You wrote notes behind my back
And my crime was being English
Your jealousies oozed from all of your pores
And my crime was being English
You stabbed the knives into my face
And my crime was being English
You tore my nation to shreds
And my crime was being English
You told me I would not be welcome
And my crime was being English
You pretended I wasn’t there
And my crime was being English
You left me standing lonely
And my crime was being English
Will you leave me alone to die
For my crime of being English?

Elaine Russell Poem
And there was I,
In a hazy dream world,
Before me -
Reds, blues, blacks and browns,
Suede, leather, other materials,
Heels, flats and wedges.
I departed,
A movement caught my eye,
A turning round,
I glanced up…
You had turned round,
You looked back,
To see me?
To see if I saw you?
I smiled,
A brief exchange of words.
I was almost dazed,
The moment ended,
You walked on,
And now I ponder…
You looked back.
