Saluting Our Heroes

Jamaica is our island’s name,
A land blessed with so much fame.
And for the part that our heroes did play,
We pause to reflect and salute them today.
Nanny of the Maroons was a heroine ,true and brave ,
And fought with all her might not to be a slave.
Marcus Mosiah Garvey made us proud of our Black race,
And everywhere he went there was pride on his face.
Paul Bogle of Stony Gut fought for justice for all,
And the powers that be had no choice but to listen to his call.
Norman Washington Manley defended workers’ rights with passion,
And fought with all his might to change every unjust working condition.
Sir Alexander Bustamante was a stalwart for workers everywhere,
And was the voice of the voiceless and spoke without fear.
George William Gordon stood tall to help the poor with their plight,
And he never backed down or turned away until things were made right.
Sam Sharpe listened and he heard what the planters said,
But he stood tall and bravely said, “No more slavery,I’d rather be dead.”
We have been blessed with a great legacy and we are a proud nation,
And our unsung heroes and heroines continue to rise to the occasion.
We must unite against the common foe and guard against complacency,
We must be resilient like our heroes and safeguard our rich legacy.
A legacy of greatness , hard work and resilience in every community,
A legacy of talent, ambition, skills and self-worth in every nook and cranny.
No retreat! no surrender! we will continue to blaze a trail,
And as the blood of our ancestors runs through our veins, we will prevail!
Not by sight but by great might, we will continue the fight,
As we vow to conquer the common foe and make things right.
And just like our heroes did , we will stand tall with pride and decency,
As we salute our heroes and safeguard our rich, bountiful legacy.

Don'T Give Up

Sinking in a deep abyss where hope feels lost,
And dreams slowly dissolve , counting not the cost.
Behold there stands a spirit, undeterred, unshaken,
Let your spirit soar as your passion is awakened.

Through the many trials and when doubts assail,
And tears flow freely like countless raindrops frail,
Be a beacon of strength, with an unwavering flame,
Don't look back but let your dreams remain the same.

The road maybe long and winding as obstacles unfold,
But deep within there's a fire of truths untold.
A spirit that's unyielding as it rises and take its stand,
Ushering the dawn of a new day , for greatness is at hand.

And in those dire moments with burdens seem so vast,
When voices echo all is lost, and time is moving too fast,
With sweat on brow, let your tears be mixed with grit,
With a strong resolve, let the world know, your spirit won't quit.

For in the deep recesses of your heart, lies a warrior's might,
A great will to conquer all and rise in the night,
To boldly face the odds with courage that is so untamed,
And a gateway to your destiny of dreams not maimed.

When doubts whisper softly and beg you to yield,
And darkness encroaches all round making wounds unhealed,
Summon your soul for all its worth and let your resilience awake,
Dare to hold on with all your might for dreams are at stake.
And when this world seems to forget and cast you away,
Remember that you have the strength, you need to face each day.
Don't be discouraged for not even a minute for within you lies,
The power to soar to new heights and reach the skies.

So stand tall with purpose amidst life's cruel tempestuous sea,
And with unwavering fortitude , let your spirit be free,
Embrace every challenge that rears its head,
Don't give up! never back down, press on instead.

The Value of a Teacher's Smile

My teacher smiled brightly at me today,
A warmth that instantly showed me the way.
Her eyes danced and twinkled like the morning sun,
A beautiful moment, filled with joy, the day had just begun.

Her radiant smile spoke more than a thousand words,
Encouragement and kindness flowing ,like melodious birds.
And in that simple gesture, I felt so truly understood,
A lasting connection was formed that only teachers could.

She saw great potential within the corners of my eyes,
Nurturing a flame so bright, making me truly realize,
That with her continued guidance, I could reach great heights,
Her smile today was a beacon of hope with guiding lights.

In that moment the classroom became my happy place,
As her smile spoke to me, reassuring me, this was a safe space.
But deep within my heart, love and gratitude bloomed,
For a teacher whose comforting smile had me consumed.

It lifted my spirits to higher heights when I felt low,
A warm and tender embrace, a gentle glow.
Her smile gave me the courage to truly believe,
That I could achieve everything I dare to conceive.

Oh precious is the power of a teacher's smile,
That bridges a thousand gaps and span every mile.
A simple act that holds immense power and might,
To inspire greatness and make things right.

So, to my dear teacher, whose smile I openly adore,
Your kindness and love for us I'll remember for sure.
For in your smile, I've found a treasure so rare,
A gentle reminder that someone truly does care.

Tranquility

Recline with ease,
no drippings
lips curled
forehead curve in a smile
breath at ease
here is the story to blend,
grin pass the shadows
as the trees bow their heads
nothing but grains scattering
dive  and  slip but  juicy melodies
rest on the brink
blink
floating dreams rising with the tide,
escape the  clutter  that drips from the lips
barren words, roses bloom bursts,
climb and rise over the waves,
deep part, dipped in ashes that weep
shadows scatter with the wind
chill as a soft bubble from the night
easy pickings in a viral trap
born into the dawn of a new day.

The Final Moment

The trees by her window bowed down low,
And the leaves cried and their voices echo
The sun greeted her with its red, hot stare,
And her thoughts wondered if her time was near.
The aroma of the honey-filled bees filled the sun lit room,
But the dancing waves down by the sea spoke of doom.
Her heart sang a mournful song and her eyes began to weep,
And in that very moment she sighed heavily and drifted off to sleep.
She awoke in the stillness of the night to the noises in the wall,
They called her by name to fight and stand tall.
The bed was a cat sinking its claws deep into her skin,
And the walls continued to beat loudly as she grasped for strength from within.
She twisted and turned in agony as she couldn’t bear the pain anymore,
Death was now her only company and it was then that she was sure.
The fan sang her a lullaby and the floor held its breath ,
As the lights hugged her close she whispered not just yet.
Oh she wished that she had wings that she could fly away,
But death called her name and said in its soft voice, today.
And she wished , oh how she wished that time was finally her friend,
But she was not a friend ,she had robbed her of her will to live,
How could she stop death when she had nothing more to give?
Kiss me on my cheeks death and whisper my name very fast,
Wrap your arms around me death as my time has come at last.

Let's Rebuild Jamaica

Take me back to the days of old,
And rich legacy that worth more than gold.
It took an entire village to raise a child,
Where they were free to roam and be wild.
The rivers and streams were free of pollution,
And the white sand beaches were for the citizens of the nation.
Now our people have been denied access
And our island home has become a big mess.
Politicians hungry for power so they lie and cheat,
While poor Jamaicans suffer great defeat.
Cost of living on the rise as we bear the brunt of a cruel regime,
And there's a deafening silence despite the scream.
Crime has infested every nook and cranny,
And our safety lies in the hands of those who fuel tyranny.
Our nation is on the verge of being nonexistent,
And the voices of of people will echo the same sentiment.
Modern day heroes and heroines arise with power,
Let's unite and take back our country together.
Now is not the time to wallow in self pity,
But to join forces and rebuild our society.
A nation poised for greatness with our talents and creativity,
As we change our mindset and go forward with integrity.
We will not be a slave to our past but be resilient like our ancestors,
As we call our citizens to action to rebuild Jamaica.

Call Me By My Name

Don’t try to put a label on me,
I am someone’s child and I am free.
I am not girl or child,
I am not a truant neither am I wild.
I have my own identity as a proud Black woman,
I am beautiful, special and I am strong.
I am not good for nothing or will I be worthless,
Feed my mind with positive thoughts so I can be empowered like the rest.
There are greater heights that I can reach tomorrow,
Help to build my self esteem not burden me with sorrow.
I am not less than any other person that you see,
I am who I am and I can be whatever I want to be.
Take the shackles off my feet and mind,
Help me to rise up and my rightful place find.
It is not about where I am from but where I want to go,
Who I will be years from now you will never know,
So don’t try to put me down like my life doesn’t matter,
I can soar to the top like you or even further.
Feed me with positive thoughts that can help me rise,
Tell me what it takes to achieve my goals instead of all these lies.
Show me the way so I can truly understand that we can be the same,
Call me dreamer ,better yet ,just call me by my name.

Make Your Mark

In a world filled with despair and strife,
Hold on to your dreams for dear life.
And with great fortitude make it loud and clear,
That you'll make your mark without any fear.

Guard your heart, be bold and brave,
You have the power within you to pave,
A path that's true and unique all round,
So make haste and always stand your ground.

There will be many hurdles in your way,
But you'll find your purpose one day.
Don't be afraid to take a chance or two,
Keep going and make your mark in whatever you do.

And with every step you take be sure to , leave a trace,
Of your resilience as you carve out your own space,
The world awaits your awesomeness and grace,
So get going with humility and purpose as you run this race.

Be quite deliberate in every word you choose to speak,
Be aware of every action that you seek,
Let your passion and light burn so bright,
That the world will stop and take notice day and night.

For in every fibre of your being greatness lies,
Unleash that fire within you as the world watches you rise.
And in all your endeavors both great and small,
Make them count and always give it your all.

And no matter where the path you've chosen may lead,
Never doubt yourself but find the strength that you need,
And leave a legacy filled with optimism and a bright spark,
As you press on and no doubt, leave your mark.

So rise above your doubts and fears
Embrace your journey and shed no tears,
But with courage as your guiding light,
Go forward with confidence and make your mark, with all your might.

Jamaica Sixty-One

Take me back in time so I can remember it all,
When as a great nation we bravely stood tall.
We fought with all our might to gain independence,
And did so with pride and much resilience.
The fighting spirit of Nanny must be kept alive,
And the boldness of our heroes will help us survive.
As we rise up as a great nation,
To reminiscence about the past at sixty-one.
No obstacle will be too great or small,
That as Jamaicans we cannot overcome them all.

Let Us Tackle It

Shattered dreams and promises that they cannot keep,
Many mouths to feed and tears as their children begin to weep.
To say that it leads to stress would be putting it mildly,
As the society suffers with them as they face their plight boldly.
Where are those who should listen as they cry out in pain?
Who will help them rise as they struggle with guilt and shame?
This is a monster that wreaks havoc on the masses,
And believe it or not it is not only among the lower classes.
But while they will get a helping hand when they fall,
The poor are left to wallow in self pity without help nonetall.
The toll of hungry days and sleepless nights lead to frustration,
As they rise to face another day of their unbearable situation.
Stress and more stress as they think of what will happen tomorrow,
And without a trace of hope they carry on with a heart filled with sorrow.
How can men, women and children who face these circumstances survive?
Without an income there is no way forward for them to grow and thrive.
And our society suffers just the same as spending decreases all round,
But at every corner they live in hope that a way can be found.
And when the bills reach the ceiling and it affects their self esteem,
They wish this was not their reality but just another awful dream.
With no way out and mounting pressure they turn to crime and violence,
Not caring much or even thinking about what will be the consequence.
Bills must be paid and food must eat and the children must go to school,
But it is a pity such a pity that this was their solution instead of a tool.
Get a piece of land and do some farming but crime is never the answer,
Become masters of your own destiny as together we fight this monster.
It is easy for me to say when I have no clue of what they go through,
And I wish oh I wish that I could make a difference for you.
The shame and low self esteem that come from loss of income,
Will make anyone’s mind blank and their fingers numb.
There is such deep sadness in their eyes as there is no form of enjoyment,
But let us find a way to rise above as together we tackle unemployment.
