Dog Snow

You remember in photographs, usually
And my keys, wallet, phone are not in safe places
My mismatched socks festoon the living room
And snuggle in next to your dishes filled with yesterday’s bones
And sometimes drifts of dog snow tumble through our kitchen
Catching around the legs of chairs
You the early riser, sometimes me
Either way with protestations and coffees
In the imperfect light

Different Skies

To thee I pledge a life
Of voyages and unexpected finds
freedoms, winding garden paths and laughter
Walls of musty, well-considered books
the occasional bottle of mustier wine, carbonara
And an even mustier dog snoring with content, in front of our fire
Of peering through leaves at different skies
Or the same one, and seeing the meaning in either
walking the same road, or diverging
Always by your side

Morning Prayers

The imperfections of my constellations
Shining bright, blind me
At the bottom of thick glass bottles
And in shining foil packets
I shelter from the glare of light
With my blue knees and red, cold, cramped feet
In dreams of the crackling sky
and visions of the singing air
I pretend, for a while, that I am whole,
That I will release my false prophets
The gods to whom I prostrate, bent constant over
Fixed on the desperate hope of change
Yet doing nothing, lying before an idol’s feet
My whispered prayers go unanswered
Clasped hands wring silently
Each morning, my plea begins anew

The Uninterrupted Night

The vagaries of our existence
Shine brightly, the stars seen without light
The clouds, always overshadowed, flash
The war of sound lost, the whispers, once soft
Fall on ears no longer deaf to silence
This is a different world, I tell myself
But it has lain in wait
singing at being heard as I with it
dancing to the hushed tunes of its melodies
The timeless hours not timeless at all
But minutes stretched too tight with chords, groaning
A language lost, rhythms obscured, desperate, deep and brimming
with the dissatisfied longing
Of the uninterrupted night
