What Happened To Our Family

When I'm playing with my grandson & things start to quiet down
He asks me once again "how come our family isn't around?"

In the midst of craft time his mind wanders off once more
"Nana, why don't I see my cousin anymore?"
...
How do you tell a four year old that things may never be the same
How do you explain how grown ups play the "I'm so done with you" game

Sometimes family can be cruel & hurt each others feelings
When communication, love & patience is really all that's needed

We all make mistakes, it happens, not one of us is perfect
Forgiveness is the key that gives our life a purpose

When family gets angry and doesn't like to talk
The hurt and pain grows out of control & precious time is lost
These moments in time can't be brought back, they are gone forever
We're running out of time when we should be spending it together

"Our family is broken" I try to casually explain
But deep inside my grandson knows that our family just isn't the same
He looks at me again with an expression I'll forever remember
"Why can't grown ups just play nice together?"

In My Grandson's Eyes

In My Grandson’s Eyes

I see his pain & watch the tears flow down his little face
“Mommy I don’t want to go” he pleads with all his might
“But Daddy’s waiting for you & it will be alright”
Against his will he goes but not without a struggle
A 5 year old shouldn’t have to deal with all this kind of trouble.
His father made him homeless & took everything from his Mom
Yet this poor child is expected to act as if nothing ever went wrong.
His Father lives a life of deceit where he believes his own lies
But the one who suffers can be seen in my grandson’s eyes.

How Do We Really Know Someone

How Do We Really Know Someone

How do we really know someone, it’s certainly hard to tell
You trust, you love & have faith that this person will treat your daughter well.
But suddenly your world caves in with unexpected news, the shock alone is hard to bear,
there were never any clues.
Apparently your son in law isn’t who you think, he’s the reason your daughter has lost her
home & now she’s teetering on the brink.
He said the car was stolen but that was just another lie,
No bills were paid, he forged her name, and all we could do is cry.
He left his family homeless & he seemed to be handling it well,
“I knew your family would take us in” was the story he would tell.
He turned our world upside down & my heart just kept on breaking,
But the anger I felt toward this man is something I wasn’t faking.
He’s “gambled” with his life for years & the lies are still apparent,
But now that we are on to him, he just seems so transparent.
He claims to be the “best Dad in the world”, how dare he be so bold,
I just pray that one day his son will realize that he’s nothing but heartless & cold.

One Day

One Day

How can one person inflict so much pain
She doesn’t realize that her family isn’t to blame
The truth hurts sometimes but it should help you to grow
She says no one loves her but that isn’t so
For years I have hoped that we could be close
But she just keeps hurting the ones who love her the most
She lives in her world where there are only three
That’s the life she chooses & the way she likes it to be
Her friends are now invited to holiday dinners
Family is no longer the invitation winners
Again and again I have tried to make peace
But now she refuses to let the pain cease
One day perhaps if only in my dreams
My sister and I will be able to experience what 'real' family means.
