Oh I Wish I Could Give Out a Hug

Oh I wish I could give out a hug,
To all those around me I love,
See FaceTime is fine, for a moment in time,
But it really just isn’t enough!

Oh I wish I could give out a hug,
I really have missed them so much,
But we mustn’t be fools, keep the 2 metre rule.
And learn other ways to show love!

Oh I wish I could give out a hug,
‘Till I’m snug as a bug in a rug,
But I’ll stick with the screen, till the powers that be,
Say the ‘R number’ stays under 1!

Oh I wish I could give out a hug,
They’re a wonderful gift from above,
We avoid those we see, when we walk down the street,
It’s so sad what the world has become.

Oh I wish I could give out a hug,
But I’ll wait till the death of this bug,
And for now I’ll resist, give an air hug and kiss,
Even though on my heart strings it tugs!

Oh I wish I could give out a hug,
But I won’t be despondent because-
The hug will come back, there’s no doubt about that,
And I’m first in the line when it does!

A Whole World Revival

This is the story of something we’ve seen, a dangerous force that’s invaded our streets.
Something so deadly, no mercy it shows. It leaves such destruction wherever it goes.
Just like a predator hunts out its prey, attacking each obstacle put in its way.
Like the sting of a bee or the bite of a snake, it happens so quickly-and then it’s too late...
Now, life as we knew it has changed overnight, the worlds grabbed its armour and set out to fight.
You may think I’m speaking of Covid-19, a virus that’s brought the whole world to its knees...
But no, I am using my words to convey how humanities breaking-it pains me to say....
Confusion, delusion means forgone conclusions; forces combine to make nuclear fusions.
This story I tell has been told over time, it is frightening, enlightening, yet no pantomime.
There’s no romance, no humour, no perfect life lesson, it’s tense with suspense and leaves all the world guessing.
This story’s no fiction, it’s honest and true, it’s the realisation we’re all living through.
These next words I’ve written jump up off the page, they pull at my heartstrings and fill me with rage...
Stigmatisation and discrimination, I cry out to God for the whole of creation.
Harassment, and prejudice; victimisation, of course it’s a story of deep-rooted racism.
Affliction, constriction and blatant damnation, I fall to my knees as I pray for our nations.
So, Corona descended and started a war, but it seems there’s a battle we need to fight more. I’d invite every person, in fact I implore, you examine your hearts, and your thoughts-are they pure?
See the world is in crisis, in conflict, and pain; will we really allow this injustice to reign?
Let’s choose our words wisely, be kind, show respect. Let’s look to the future and all re connect. Embrace all our difference, we must recognise-it’s not that which is causing the human divide.
We have the ability to reach perfect unity, fight against racism-built herd immunity!
Let’s all change our future and learn from the past, we can’t let this hatred and prejudice last. So, let this time now be our realisation, lets spread peace and joy to all civilisation. For the sake of mankind and for all our survival, let’s make 2020 a whole world revival!

Missed

My tummy started growing,
And the sickness came in waves,
I knew that I was pregnant,
It was very early days.

I checked each week's development,
Each stage my baby reached,
Overfilled with joy,
Because this baby was in me.

I passed the 12 week milestone,
Then shared the news with friends,
Having no idea at all,
My dream was just about to end.

Almost 14 weeks I was,
Least that's what I believed,
And then the news came at the scan,
The news that shattered me.

It seems my body tricked me,
And for months it hid the truth,
So I found it hard to understand,
To just accept the news.

I had no indication,
They say ignorance is bliss,
But I'd never heard the notion,
A miscarriage could be 'missed'.

"You sure you've had no bleeding?
And you've not had any pain?"
Those words have always haunted me,
Time and time again.

A rather harsh sonographer,
Then said without a care,
As she turned the screen to show me,
"There is now no baby there!"

To her perhaps a day job,
Not a loss that broke her heart,
But to me it was my baby,
And I'd loved him from the start.

He wasn't just a group of cells,
He would have had a heart,
It didn't beat for long,
Before the Lord made him depart.

But a person is a person,
Regardless of their size,
A little growing baby,
Leaves an imprint on your life,

He wasn't here for very long,
A moment within time,
But I carried him throughout his life,
I'll love him now through mine.

I never met my baby,
But I loved him from the start,
A moment in my womb,
And now a lifetime in my heart.

The Human Pressure Cooker

Living with depression can mean peace is hard to find. It’s like a pressure cooker; building tension over time.
The stress and sadness rises, but has nowhere it can go, so you start to feel like one day soon you may just simply blow!
Sometimes there are signals when the pressure starts to rise; your heart beats faster, breathing quickens, tears can fill your eyes.
There seems no rhyme nor reason; on the outside things are good, and so you yearn to smile like you really think you should.
But as a safe precaution you may hide yourself away, as the pressure in the cooker can be different every day.
It’s affected by the atmosphere and everything around, so you isolate yourself to try to turn the pressure down.
Though then you live in fear that it may take you by surprise, because every added stress can cause the heat inside to rise.
But the human pressure cooker has a purpose you will find, as it tries to give out signals to your heart and to your mind. It lets you know when things are cool but also when they’re hot and it doesn’t let you feel that you are coping when you’re not.
And there are ways to control it, you don’t have to self combust. You can give instruction manuals to the people that you trust. So tell them how to care for you, explain the things you need; there’ll be times they need to check on you, and times they’ll need to leave. As sometimes you may need your space; the solace of your home, and other times you may feel like you just can’t be alone.
So, like a pressure cooker, when things really feel extreme; you need to find a way to just release a bit of steam!

Storm Corona

Life is unpredictable, we know this fact in principle, as no-one is invincible; but life can be so hard.
So, we start, to try to write our narrative, each verse we search for positives, consider new alternatives, we keep alert; on guard.
But storms come with aggression, send us into new dimensions, some say trials are meant to strengthen, then they pass.
I’ve seen trauma come and go, more than anybody knows, and hurt can follow like a shadow whilst it lasts.
Some rub salt into a wound, whilst others help to get you through, and when the skies return to blue, new hope is born.
One day we will beat Storm Corona, and destroy its cruel persona, we’ll unite in strength together, and embrace a whole new norm.

I have also produced this in spoken word form, which you can watch and listen to at the below link:

Craziest Time Amidst a Pandemic

Do you have a temperature? A new and constant cough?
Has your sense of taste or smell just suddenly got lost?
If you have the symptoms, you may need to get some rest.
You have to isolate at home, but first-go get a test!
And also, please download an app, and tell us how you feel.
We need to track and trace you, as the threat to life is real!
And no-one else at home can leave; they too must stay inside.
Control the virus, stay alert, but most of all-save lives!

Hope

Hope is a feeling that sits deep within,
It’s a gift from the Lord when our hearts trust in Him.
There are many reminders that hope is around,
Like a beautiful flower that grows from the ground.
It’s the insect that waits safe inside its cocoon,
In the hope it will change to a butterfly soon.
It’s the wonder of life when a baby is born,
And the love of a friend when you’re feeling forlorn.
It’s the ending of wars and the cure for disease,
It’s when people work hard to find vaccines we need.
It’s when countries emerge from the lockdowns in place,
With a longing to heal all the loss they have faced.
Hope is a strength that we can’t live without,
It can conquer our battles with worry and doubt.
And when we fall down, it can pick us back up,
It’s a constant reminder of God’s love for us.
And when we grow weary, it gives us a boost,
It points to our Maker and grounds us in truth.
Hope knows no fear, and it’s not filled with sorrow,
It gives us a glimpse of a brighter tomorrow.
Hope brings a powerful meaning to life,
It can break through the darkness and show us the light.
It helps us persist when we don’t feel we can,
It reminds us there’s always a God given plan.
And through Him our hope is forever assured,
It’s a stronghold, an anchor, for all of our souls.

The Sting of Death

May you know the pain you caused.

May you know the unexplainable, unimaginable and all encompassing sense of loss you left me with.

You took my dearest loved one and replaced them with grief. I never wanted grief, I never asked for grief.

You struck in the night with no warning. You stripped me of any free will, any sense of choice, any other option but to say goodbye. Yet ironically you took that from me too...I didn’t get to say goodbye!

Grief is like a never ending tunnel. It’s darkness, it’s the unknown, it’s anger, fear, sadness and loss all encapsulated into one. It’s perhaps a necessity though. After all, people say that the only certainty in life is death. And so grief is a process, a journey, a presence.

People also say that time is a healer. I will therefore let grief stay a while but there will come a time when it will need to leave, a time when life will have to go on, and I want to chose when that will be.

Lockdown In the Mind

We’ve all been stuck in lockdown but I know another kind. It’s a different imprisonment; it’s lockdown in the mind.
It’s not controlled by government or those in roles that lead. It’s like an evil force that took up residence in me.
It’s not reviewed by data and it’s not controlled by man, it preys on any victim just because it knows it can.
Though it does have similarities to what we all now know, like rules of who to speak to, what to do and where to go.
It makes me want to isolate when it’s on the attack. At times it disappears though I expect it to be back.
In some ways like the virus it can catch me by surprise. It makes me fear the world but also thoughts I keep inside.
Imagine if this lockdown now was all you’d ever known. The only place that you felt safe was hiding in your home.
Some with mental illness live their lives like this each day; they struggle with the outside world so try to hide away.
Corona virus lockdown that we know will one day stop; for those with mental illness lockdown in their mind may not.
That’s not to say it can’t be beat; I’ve conquered it before, through faith and understanding and a lot of good support.
But I want to raise awareness while this time is far from nice, that for many round the world this type of lockdown is their life.
So we must be understanding, show compassion all the time; be patient with our loved ones and above all else, be kind.
