We lay cuddled like innocent children.

Valentine’s Day
Pink lacy cards,
heart-shaped boxes
of sweet chocolates,
bouquets of roses,
candlelight dinners,
romance in the air.
A heartbreaker
If you have lost the
love of your life
and are outside
looking in at the party.
No romance today.
But love is many things.
Valentines are sons,
daughters, children,
and grandchildren,
dear friends whom we
love, and who love us.
We have our memories,
stored in picture albums,
in family stories and jokes,
and in our own hearts,
where the romance we
once had still lives.
Fifty-nine
years flew by
here we are
Still in love
I love you
you love me
Fifty-nine
Valentines
we have shared
Our two hearts
through the years
multiplied
Three children
five grand-kids
spouses too
Now we are
fifteen hearts
how love grew!

I wish I could have had a normal life
Just one woman that I called a wife
I wish I had all the things they had
those that stayed, friends that wed
I wish the house where I live was mine
the deed with my name on the dotted line
I wish the steps were stairs not children
something claimed over chosen
I wish, I wish, with all my might
that all those valentines
were just one wife
A WREATH FOR SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY
A clew within this virgin card from the head
Which you denied and now which gives you hope
Has come to me. When you opened your mouth
The scent of honeysuckle drenched my shoulder
Your hair tossed, though neatly cut
Still betraying my wild, rapturous caress
Your eyes, that were soft, are now sharp -
Knowing pollution, spoilage, missiles;
Behaving with me with speech-robbing words,
Soul-hurting cynicism, lethal logic.
Now I’m staked to the ground, a paling
Around my house where golden children
Will never flower, who once flowered
In your heart of satin’s reddest hearts.
