Out in the desert, late at night
The stars and moon are shining bright
The coyotes sing,
While crickets keep beat
Cool night's joy, replaces heat
The owl sets out on nightly quest
"Who, whoo's my meal?"
ever his jest
The man in the moon
witnessed escapes
Wild dashes
for thorn bush drapes
The merry stars
with twinkling eyes
Laughed at the hoot owl's
great surprise
Kangaroo rat leaps in delight
Out in the desert late at night
Thank you for taking the time
to show me how to write.
Thank you for the sleepless nights you
spent marking my work,
Thank you for the time you took off holidays
to give me extra attention when I needed it,
I am who I am because of you
Your hands have molded governors and presidents
rock stars and writers.
Thank you for showing me how to hold a pen
So that I can write this.
Raccoon with knowing eyes stares at me from across the room.
He is darling! Brought home from an estate sale.
Hanging from a limb, accusing me, chastising me, all powerful.
I wish I knew who painted him.
He is unique, one of a kind. And he is signed.
I wonder at the artist, Carolyn ’80.
Was eighty her last name, or was she painting
him in 1980? That sounds more accurate.
Was she a high school student who gave him to her teacher out of love?
Who would not want to keep it? Of course, this was an estate sale, so….
This raccoon and I have an unusually strong spiritual connection.
When I smile or look up he makes me feel safe, and happy.
I adore him. Thank you Carolyn ’80, your painting delights me in all ways!
I was just a kid
No clue of the challenges ahead
Looking back you were truly
An angel put on my path
To walk me through a tough transition
You even looked like my grand-mother
I was such a naïve gullible youth
Totally blind to your silver angel wings
Or did I really believe it was normal
That loving people all have wings

Yes there are
The teacher who cares
The fireman who dares
The police who simply just do
The nurse who won't tire for you
Yes there are
The vet who burns the night light
The doctor who makes it right
The carer who's word is more than alright
The volunteer who won't quit
The social worker who'll make sure
The friend who'll stand by you
Yes there are
The soldiers who'll protect
The sailors who'll defend
The airmen who will not quit
when they're in the thick of it
Yes there are
Good people in our lives
Good people with no disguise
Good people who we should all praise
To all the good people out there
I salute you because you really care.
Among thousands of Indians, he rose,
born in Rameshwaram, a tiny village of the south..
Dreamt of changing the world
using wit and reason -
learning and teaching he spent his life.
Kindness and selflessness he valued,
and wanted to spend his last breath teaching -
loyal to his words, he did,
and is all that Indians think of, now ~
May he rest in peace.

A Letter To Kahlil Gibran
To have read your poetry book The Prophet
And found a road map to life in your words
Understood from knowledge, I will profit
Your poems came from a source never heard
How deep the well from which you drew wisdom
And how high the sky where your truth has flown
Man's blind vision, you never walked away from
Your spirit pure, spoke from a place unknown
To be a teacher, yet to never preach
To speak of life's yearning for tomorrow
And yearn for our humanity from each
Question if we'll ever unmask sorrow
To thank you for the many truths I found
To break free, when understanding is bound
