Uncle was a spelunker
drove to the caves
in his clunker
(it was quite the junker)
without a sound
he sunk underground
pitch black as night
and on his hat
a bright white light
(the switch it was waterproof)
to see which stalagmites
might reach the roof
where stalactites
clung on tight
unafraid of bats
flitting around
never flunking
Uncle loved going down
but sorely and sad to say
on one of those getaways
a painful cluster of bad carbuncles
curtailed Uncle's spelunking days

In this age of post-civility
not to mention post-amiability
I find most posts I read
full of hostility...
It's the era of post-biology
as well as post-ideology
'TBD Birth Certificates'
without apology...
In this, the dawn of pre-disintegration
along with burgeoning segregation
The most-maligned phrase in our nation
'merit-based evaluation' ...
So, into my bunker I prepare to hunker
and since I'm no spelunker
'A Century of Automotive Progress' I write -
from gas-powered clunkers
~ to EV junkers

A spelunker he was
from adolescence on.
An outdoorsman
with the best equipment
exploring caves
one after another
shining a big flashlight
as he weaved among the
stalactites and stalagmites
saying he would never
explore another cave
once he found the right one.
He found that cave at forty,
sold his flashlight,
married and settled down.

FLASHES (from The Room)
Flashes!
This Zarathustra image
Spelunker comfy
Smug captive
Alone in the world
The safety element – thought brings warmth
humidity
Walls
Ceiling
But a single window
Yes – always that glance out the window
At what o’clock?
Thought – millions of such rooms
their snug occupants in similar experience
Millions alone in the world
Billions!
Something out of an outer space odyssey –
Mind tied to a silver cord
Floating out there
Alone!

Chased the snake
Down into the hole
Digging deeper
Much like a
Spelunker
He happened upon a mole.
