sleep god
Somnus
wave your wings like wands
take me
to the magic great beyond
make for my head an earthen pillow
i'll snooze
in the shade of a willow
and when nighttime's silver stars
twinkle
i'll channel my inner Rip Van Winkle
in crystalline canyons
i will take
a trip
in dreamland's mystic mosaic
all surrounded by feathery fluff
i could doze forever in that stuff
replace my machinations
and schemes
with a cornucopia
of fruity dreams
of an angel's warm and loving charms
as I slumber
soundly in her arms
blarrrrrng!
an angry alarm clock
blast
wakes me
tells me
heaven
doesn't last

Elude me, sleep,
like a scorned lover
who leaves me breathless,
chest tight,
gripped with vines.
Leave me, sleep,
alone in the void,
not one sense available
as I hang,
immobile in purgatory.
Call me, sleep,
vibrant siren in an inky sea,
I fall to your whim,
oblivious,
into your arms.

“Sleep”
Somnus, Somnus
Those sweet words my mother sang to me
It is a wonderful state to be
How much I long for it
How much I need It.
Somnus, Somnus
For I have been asleep far too long
I have been dead in myself
I have not seen the light or heard a song
I have ignored Him
Somnus, Somnus
I cannot get peace from it
Because I have not run to Peace
Somnus, Somnus
Now I have awakened
I have seen the light, I have heard a song
I have seen His Light and heard His Song
Somnus, Somnus
I can now lay my head down a rest
Because I have been given what’s best
Somnus, Somnus
Those sweet words my mother sang to me
Now take on a new melody
Wonderful Word of Life, Amazing Grace
I will now run the race
I have no friend in remonstrance
Somnus, Somnus
I lay my head down in good conscience
