breeze wafting ashore
surf invades beach's white sand

Summer slips slowly, sullenly southward
Together the terns try taking their turns
Under unusually ubiquitous umber umbrellas
Versatile velocity verified via villagers
While winter welcomed withering weather.

From boat's mass thrown up
Wings fondling light and wonder
The fish shudders awe
I caught in splendour
Net my eyes in white of wings
And sea frightened thawed
So water rippled
The sea in sunshine trembling
Against departure
They turned, flashed in dive
The sun made coronet bright
On feathers waving
True there was a cry
In self praise for pain un-groaned
Just for Leda's sake.

Listen to poem:
Lakeside at dawn,
all is calm, quiet, but expectant.
Then, peeping from the silence,
barely discernible
is the sound of whispering wings
stuttering a plaintive beat, intermittent.
It is the flock of fairy terns soaring together
in wavy, gliding flight formation,
just above the sand, just above the waves
returning to their lakeside roost,
to gossip, cheep, squabble and rest.

Free verse
summer burns a lazy haze into the mind
Of seaming endless days enjoyed
The sea warms to a silk sun touch
Rolling on hot sandy beaches
Curling surf bursts boils and bubbles
Froth afloat and running swiftly
Then left on sand to disappear
Before the next caress
shells and stones all roll in water
Dancing with the tempo's sound
Falling tidal songstress whispers
coastal breezes hum along
Gulls and terns are singing background
To a lazy Summer Song
