Acrostic Word
Grey-robed ladies materialise at castles
Hideous red-eyed entities hover in woods
On horseback, headless riders gallop past
Silently, spectres watch and cause unease
Throwing objects at exorcists, spirits laugh

Fever Dreams
Delirious desires cackle
while spectres whirl
senselessly
On oceans' savage sway
blankets drenched
delusion
Humane hands, soft
spoken words
strengthen
Fickle health, a seesaw
feeds erratic mind
with despair

Haiku Sunrise
rising in the east
a shimmering golden orb ~
darkness becomes light
*
swirls of morning mist
ghostly spectres hovering ~
fade as sun rises
*
as the sun climbs high
shadows cast on the landscape ~
now retreat slowly

Not Describing Death
I would probably start with dimensions
but turn to the doctor for more
Seconds queue behind eternities
Air frozen in favour
Comparison would be next
But what is the opposite of life
Shrouded movie spectres
demons hell are plentiful
Lights that magnetise
Descriptive shade and shape
The virgin visitor
who meets us all just once
but then who would we tell...

Spectres
...inspired by 'The New Faces' by W.B. Yeats
We dead shall walk the hallways unopposed,
and lend an air of mystery to paint
and plaster peeling, thus exposed
when daylight turns to dusk; for there's a faint
uneasiness as new ones gather, pested
to hear our ghostly whisperings and may
have second thoughts, their courage tested;
were we not bolder occupants than they?...

Darkling
Under waning moon and festooned sky
With darkness to illuminate the night
It is already morning
Though beneath blackened heavens
One couldn't hope to know
It will soon reverse its darkling effect.
This is faith beyond the wraith
This is hope surpassing spectres
Yesterday's sun is no
Assurance of today's
But faith sticks out its hand
Until warmed by mornings kiss....

The Wreck
He lies sprawled on the trench
Drenched by the night dew
Overcome by over indulging
Cheap liquor has taken its toll
Back at home his wife tosses in bed
The night is cold and its too chilly
The kids had to go to bed half fed
Querying when dad will be home
He mumbles incoherent stuff
At least he tried to get home
Its first cock crow he surrenders
Tortured by faceless spectres...

Nightmare
Cold moon in the sky, cold draft in my room,
small wonder why I feel impending doom.
Scufflings at midnight from inside my door;
shadows of something are crossing my floor!
I'm rigid with fear as to what they might be,
those scary spectres are coming for me!
I tighten my grip on a poker I found,
trembling in terror I don't make a sound!
Just when I despair of making a break
mom tousles my hair, "It's time to awake!"...

Old Town
I walk the streets of my old town,
And death was walking all around,
The spirits of the dead disowned,
The lucky ones that hadn’t drowned,
But I still lived amongst them,
Grey spectres in my room at night,
Whispering voice just out of sight,
Angry spirits tortured might,
Muttering almost heard, too right,
Begone from here amongst them,
I walked away unto the night,
I walked for miles it felt alright,
Better gone than driven mad tonight,
No return for me amongst them.....

Lake Alma '69
Lake Alma Hills
(near Weyburn, Saskatchewan, 1969
People are born here
And people die
Some live scarcely more
Than a shadow existence
Mere
Specters
Tossed about
In the speechless wind
And sand that
Sweeps across
The uneasy and lonely
Beauty
Of
Lake Alma hills...
