a tear in each eye
surviving the bad hair days
my tumor and I
both shrink from radiation
the treatments tear us apart

The poets sing of it.
The artists worship it.
We seek it in gardens,
find it in dreams.
I shrink from the mirror
because I’m a slave to it;
a serf to beauty’s tyrannous queen.

a cold wind mocks a feeble sun
leaves shrink from its touch
squirrels shiver in mink tails
birds fluff down feathered coats
a lone hawk skis the clouds
a school bus inhales shivering children
a dog paws the frozen ground
the cat smiles from its litter box

ALONE IN WORDS
I cower from the rumbling squall of loneliness
and shrink from the shards of misdirected words.
The mantle of hope escapes my ambitions, forever silencing my courage.
I am drowning in discontent.

Don’t step on a sidewalk crack.
Walk away from ladders.
Check your daily calendar
And you’ll know why it matters.
Shrink from black cats and be sure
Your mirrors stay unbroken.
Hold on to your rabbit’s foot
Or other lucky token.
For today’s a day to fear;
It hits us, like a slap.
Beware of Friday the thirteenth
If you believe that crap!

My confidence gone
I shrink from the page
And lay down the pen
There are no words to say.
My composure is shaken
I walk from the book
And shutter the door
There are no lines today.
My life has been broken
I package my clothes
And leave blank the label
There is no where to stay.
I walk from the world
I leave not a trace
No one will miss me
When I've gone way.

Something sinister tells
In dark deeds that around us swell
And spell a presence drear
Demons festering the air
Men have grown cold
And callous is the norm
Of our times
And we shrink from it in fear
Without anger to say
What is being lost is dear
Is this silence
A sign of some culpability
Somthing about human vulnerability
We cannot confess again
Despite the hell of private pain
Is this the holy spirit leaving
And we so busy
Do not know
Cannot know
