Many nights there were no new dreams,
so I borrowed from the old
Resurrecting the scaffolding
of what lay unbuilt—untold

barnum would have been proud
bulldogs in too twos
embraces for show
disks and dark booths
raw raws
scaffolding on saxophones
Scotland-yards of curtains
damp mermen
virginia sweet william
and dollar bills in
the greatest broken worth

Mr. Ollie used a tall scaffold
It was rickety and kind of old.
He had to fix walls which had black mold.
Cousin Jeff offered to hold.
Scaffolding so it would not fold.
Mr. Ollie said it was good as gold.
Forgetting he had an awful cold.
Sneeze knocked him off, big and bold.
Dead on the floor for days I’m told.
Doubt if house will ever be sold

A twelve year old boy
stands covered in ‘mud’
What the plasterers call
cement
His Grandfather came
and offered a job
For each hour,
he’d pay fifty cents
The buckets were heavy,
the scaffolding high
As he kept those mortar boards
full
And at the end of that summer,
more man than a boy
With new confidence
—his future to cull

The fall
was imminent
on the moment of complete truth.
I was talking of annihilation
standing on scaffolding of fear.
Walking on burning coals
was a sacred commitment,
a spiritual solidarity,
with lake salt –
to lift the spirit
of sagging trees.
Of freedom of body
in camps of violence.
Without sound, I wanted to see
the creation in nothing.
Anything was happening
under the bald sky.

Like rivers of blood so flooding,
These poppies stay ever budding…
Stalks look like tired soldiers, nodding,
Stems stall like soldiers scaffolding!
Petals, like pleasing gun layers, peep,
Stamens like soldier-spiders creep;
Like smart guns, they seldom unfold,
Like army secrets soldiers hold!
Sign of still, calm, quiet future!
As enthralling armed men stature!
When, in wars, soldier-martyrs, die,
Lying on them, like mourners, cry!
