Premium Member Chintzy In Quincy
A staid old art collector in Quincy
dotes on cats but with people is chintzy
He willed old shoes to his wife
and to his son a jackknife
His tabby got a Monet and Da Vinci

Calling Us Home
With only twelve notes
the music commands
Some white and some black
their harmony grand

Scoring the melody
eternal and free
Whether Quincy or Frank,
Prince, Peggy, or me

Heaven the audience
 Angels out front
Truth for a drummer
Sandalphon conducts

All time in abeyance
the chorus in song
Both gates swinging open
—the silence is gone

Picking Blackberries
The Blackberries in Quincy
Are almost ready to pick
My annual event on
Making myself sick

You drive for hours
Knowing it's going to take
High hopes of canning
And pies to bake

Wrestling through bushes
For hours on end
One for the bucket
Two for the mouth over again

Fingers are sore
From the thorns along the vine
A full days work shows
An empty pail, full stomach, but all mine...

Quincy Illinois: 1962
Quincy, Illinois: 1962

          long before Barack Obama

Those days my father toiled in Quincy,
two weeks, no more,
he said he saw no blacks, except for
two young ladies busing dishes.
Daisy badges on their uniforms
announced their names,
their years of service.
He still remembers how
through all his meals
he wanted to stand
and shout:
Where do you live?
What do you do
for recreation?

When Clarity Visits
When clarity visits
go with it,
Write quick
and don't twist it,
As you already know,
Our minds
are like the wind,
Conditioned knowing failure,
Easily blown away,
In many ways...
Modern distractions
distracting almost everyone,
So many settle,
Stagnant
like raw metal,
Till that day
you stand up tall,
Focusing on
cause
and effects,
The path
of crafting
ya craft,
Let's try this...
Why not?
