We put the urn aboard ship.
Excubant vigil by starlight kept.
Cradled in a zephyr grip,
distant, the desolate catacomb crept.
Homeward, encumbered vessels slip
adorned in the dreams of those who slept.

Vessel of Birthing Buds
We put the urn aboard ship
Roots teeming from lavish fields
Yellow bells and peonies birthing soon
As the moon softens its limbs
Brightening the way our vessel rides
Through blissful miles of springtime day.

The Myth of the Tenth Muse
As Sappho climbed the mountainside,
She knew the Muses waited there,
And she was welcomed by all nine
And given Laurels for her hair.

She wandered gaily through the wood,
Until she found Apollo’s cave,
And then she dived into the spring -
She’d seen the place where poets bathe.

As nymphs were dancing round the fire,
She played a paean on her lyre....

SYLVIA

I hear they have placed
A pretty blue plaque
High above your flat
So that tourists can find you
And say that this is the spot
Where you killed yourself.

Lucky girl, you modern Sappho
To take the quantum leap
Like a comet to take your place
Among the darkest regions of empty space
With a brilliance that few can keep
And even less the mind to know
Where no dull planet can perturb you
As fallen flowers have no faces....

Sappho's Climb
SAPPHO'S CLIMB

Is this Sappho to whom i speak
Bride of Lesbos with the low forbidden voice
She climbs the rocky mountains dangerous peak
Calls in the blue daughters of twilight to rejoice
in the bursting spring. She brings her songs and lyre
Delights the camping soldiers with the fire
Bold call-- vibrates soldierly repressed desires
Sirens yearn --bid most valiant heroes return
Desert-- slaves to familiar arms that hold them til they burn...

Sappho
Crimson lips, lovers awaken with a kiss
Creamy white skinned Goddesses resting
In a time where Socrates lusted after Sappho's
Poetry and art.

The Grecian people worshiped her with
her beauty and exquisite prose. On the wings
of her art she played enchanting music arranged
for immortality.

Golden chariots in fields of apples bold,
yet, solitary like one fallen from the tree,
Sappho wrote her memoirs and music
while exiled, her death unspoken....

The Morning After the Night Before
My mind is still on your Grecian isle yet lost
Through time to another place where I exist
As Sappho sings her songs to me once more
And time unites worlds.

I dream as you lie beside me of rivers
Winding gently down your sloping hills, curving
Around the whispered breeze as you breathe, inhaling
Senses from my heart.

Awaken Aphrodite with discreet kisses
Placed in indiscreet places as sunlight calls
Revealing the night of cardinal pleasure
And whispers hello!...
