The man took me to the Dog Park, I think his name is Jim.
He brought along a round thing, a disk made out of plastic.
He put it close by my nose, so I sniffed it round the rim.
I've sniffed vinyl many times, and didn't think it fantastic.
Then Jim became animated. His eyes became alert.
Then he threw the disk with all his strength, aiming for the sky.
The disk spun up above us and then came crashing to the dirt.
I felt bad for him and thought, "Jim, you gave it your best try".
Jim gave a wave to Bob who stood with his dog at the Park.
His sheltie was friendly, though he tired anybody out.
I gave a woof and the sheltie sent back a greeting bark.
When Jim threw the disk, the sheltie knew what it was about.
Bob's dog leapt like a dancer with moves like a Frisbee ace.
His jaws wrapped around the disk while he floated in the air.
Jim's dog had to try it, and occasionally won the race.
Now Jim's dog and the sheltie are known as the Frisbee pair.

It was love at first sight for Eloise,
Sweet child who always said, 'Thank you" and "please."
A doll Santa brought her on Christmas morn.
To Eloise, a baby girl was born.
The little one was a doting mother
and loved her dolly, wanting no other
But one day, Eloise woke from sleeping
Baby was gone ~ Eloise was weeping.
The family searched in many places.
Everyone wore sad frowns on their faces
No doubt about it, Baby Doll was lost
Eloise cried all night. She turned and tossed.
Come morning, Pearl the Sheltie, raised her head
Eloise yelled, "Baby Doll's in Pearl's bed!!"
That pup wanted a baby of her own
instead of pull toys, or a chewy bone!
Now, Eloise and Pearl are quite content
They carry their dolls into a play tent
Like two little mommies they go to sleep
With babes at their side, they don't make a peep.

It is not so easy to forgive
old dogs and old friends dying on you.
Once I had a mongrel pup
got her from a shady pet store
back in a shabby past.
Parvo came and she went - not easy.
Once, an old blind Sheltie
came to visit from me
from an afterlife.
That ghost-dog looked like a friend
I had never really known. She still loved me;
that kind of love is never easy
to lose.
Dad, you give us a victory salute
on your way to the chemotherapy unit.
I realized how courageous in the face
of a famishing cancer you were
but only some years later
when I recalled my own cowardice.
Those kind of memories
are never going to be easy.
My friend was a poet of God;
He sang like a toad on a sinking lily pad
and did not care if he drowned
with his lovely mouth still open wide.
Why did you still sing on that death-bed Ted?
Why did a spirit fly from your lips
as a puff of pure light
after you asked for one last cigarette?
When you fell upwards
I heard the sky crack the roof of the world
then you were gone - and not the easy
way.

Took my dead dog for a long walk today.
No one that past-by saw her,
even I only glimpsed the whisk
of her tail as she pulled at her leash,
or overheard her cheerful panting
as ice-crunching traffic rolled on by
Back home
she laid down quite satisfied,
at my feet.
I am reading a book about Shelties,
how they were bred to be working dogs
and won’t ever be lapdogs.
I glance down,
she is already asleep.
I read on
herding images together
just for her.

I’ve scribbled a million prayers disguised as poems;
why won’t you speak to me?
Can you at least tell me where
my checkered golfing socks are?
I once had a dog that could translate
Your needs and expectations,
now I only have Google
or I read the works of Sufi mystics,
and they all talk a lot.
I’ll keep on writing angry, comic, sad, tragic,
hopeful words until you say: Enough!
You will have to read them also
for omnipresence means everywhere – I checked.
If you want to call me to discuss these concerns,
and if there is no other way,
will you please return as a dog again,
a dopey black Labrador, a snappy terrier,
or a neurotic Sheltie
they all would work, but of course as always,
the breed is up to You.

Oh Lady, my Lady, my sweet Sheltie love,
Was called by God to her home up above,
There she will share her love, her spirit and her Light
and play with her friends until her family alights.
Lady came to us at three weeks of age,
Energy seemed to flow from her as she slept in her cage,
She was always running and jumping--just having some fun-
As she jumped to the beat of her own Piper's drum.
I hadn't seen Lady for so many years,
But I kept her close through my son, the Dear,
I knew Lady would soon leave us, due to her age,
And that's what happened last week--thus closing her page.
My Ex sent a letter which brought a tear to my eye,
It said how he would miss her and say his "Good-bye",
For he buried her with sorrow, then built her a Shrine
Which tells of her life and her joy which will always be mine.
Oh Lady, my Lady, my sweet Sheltie love,
I will miss you until I see you above.
