Critterature: A Fine Bromance

A seahorse named Irv finally got up the nerve
To ask a starfish named Larry to marry him.
Said Larry, "Sure, swell, and it's high time as well,
Now it's legal in this aquarium.*
But, oh, what I would give if we could live
Off an island somewhere in Fairyland.
But for you, my love, I'd gladly move
To Maine, Vermont, or Maryland.**
And while we're on the subject, dear,
I guess I'd better warn ya
That even though it's okay now,
I'll take a pass on California."

Author's notes:
*Re Supreme Court ruling of June 26, 2015, making same-sex marriage legal nationwide.
**According to my archives, when I first wrote this piece, in 2013, these states were the three main ones who recognized gay marriage. But, even though there has been much progress, I think this same-sex marriage business is far from over, and after the smoke and dust finally clear…if they ever do…these original three again may well be the only sanctuaries. And who wants to live in California, anyway?
